She couldn’t help but worry, despite his reassurance, that maybe like her, Travis was trying to protect his heart if he was considering leaving Divine again.

“Don’t overthink it, Nika.”

She looked up at him and saw the understanding and warmth there and halted him when he started to put his clothing back together. She maintained eye contact as she leaned forward and licked his cock clean. After she was done, she replaced the waistband of his black, knit underwear, zipped his pants back up, and worked at his belt until he took over for her. When she glanced up at him, the intensity in his gaze made her go weak all over. She was held in thrall as he sat up and held out his arms.

She went to him and he wrapped her in his strong embrace and lifted her onto his lap, holding her as if she was a treasure. The stinging returned to the backs of her eyes and she blinked to stop the tears from forming. Her heart throbbed and she realized it was too late to build walls with him. It took her one day to fall for Hank. She wondered if he felt the same.

Chapter Eight

Kate Benedict stood with Grace on her front porch, waving good-bye as their friend turned onto the gravel driveway and headed toward the state highway. Seth Carter had just arrived on an impressive example of Harley Davidson artistry. He also waved to the driver of the Camaro as she paused and shared a few laughing words with her before she continued on. Grace chuckled when a booming, thumping sound started and Kate cocked an ear to listen.

“What’s all that racket?” Kate asked as the horses pranced nervously before settling down to graze again as the vehicle moved down the driveway.

Grace giggled and said, “I think it’s Metallica.” Looping her arm through Kate’s, Grace led her down the porch to where Seth waited. “Do you think you’ll be warm enough?”

Seth smiled as he held out his hand to assist her down the steps. “No worries, Grace. Jayne sent her leather riding jacket with me when she found out I was taking Kate for a ride. We’ll be back in plenty of time for supper. Jayne can’t wait to see you later this afternoon, ma’am.”

Kate patted his hand and said, “This motorcycle looks brand spanking new, Seth.”

“It is. I traded my Softail for a touring motorcycle when Jayne made it clear she really enjoys riding. I wanted to get something that would be more comfortable for her. She loves the backseat and hopes you will, too.”

Kate noticed that Grace still looked a little concerned as Seth helped her into the black, fringed, leather jacket and then took the helmet Seth handed to her. She turned to Grace and hugged her. “Don’t worry, dearest. It’s been a few years, but this isn’t my first time on a Harley.”

Seth smiled reassuringly at Grace and then turned to her. “Now, Kate, you and I know you’re no one’s little old lady but I’m not comfortable with you climbing up onto the seat. You could slip. Do you mind if I lift you into it?”

“Oh, pfft! I can handle that little climb.”

Seth cocked his head and looked at her with those hypnotic pale blue eyes, not budging a bit, and a girlish giggle bubbled up inside her.

“All right, but only because it’ll ease your worry. I never took you for a bossy sort of man, Seth Carter. My illusions are dissipating rapidly.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Seth said with a slight smile as he gently lifted Kate into the seat, which was several inches above his and would provide her with an excellent view as they toured the hill country around Divine. The prospect was positively exhilarating.

Seth fixed the chin strap on her helmet for her, affording her the chance to more closely examine this young man’s demeanor. He looked exactly the same as he had the last time she’d seen him but Kate could sense a change. Seth was a quiet man. When she’d met him the year before, he’d just experienced a great upheaval when his soon-to-be wife, Jayne and son, Toby had been abducted and taken to Lusty. Jayne had been injured but they’d all been reunited safely. Back then, the tension had seemed to emanate from him. A year later, Kate felt peace like a deep, deep river rolling through him. Here was a happy, contented man.

They waved to Grace, and Kate watched as she slowly walked back to the front door, and she said a prayer for her friend. Something was off with Grace and she hadn’t put her finger on it quite yet.
