Robin’s expression soured at that. “Spencer, I don’t want to destroy his career. Even if he is an awful person, I don’t want to be responsible for something like that. I just don’t think it’s very fair how he treated me.”

“Well, my lawyer friend is excellent at his job. I’m sure if you explain how you feel that we could figure out a way to get back at Old Man Jenkins without destroying him totally.”

“Hmm, I’ll think it over,” Robin concluded as she finished her second cocktail.

By the time half the journey had passed, Robin had also fallen asleep and it gave me an opportunity to speak with Rylee alone for the first time since we’d boarded the plane. I smiled over at her, hoping to soften her up a little before I tried to talk about our relationship again. She beat me to it, however.

“So, Spencer, what are you hoping to get out of this weekend?” she asked with a raised eyebrow.

“I thought I’d been clear about what I wanted from the very start, Rylee,” I said with a shrug. “I want to get to know my son and apologize for all the trouble I’ve caused with your mom. Besides, I knew getting us out of Halston would make you feel more comfortable about everything. Since there won’t be anyone around to spot us, we’ll not spark any gossip.”

Rylee nodded and pursed her lips. “Well, I have to say I’m surprised about all of this. I never knew you had such a large amount of money you could just throw around. Are you sure you can afford to charter a plane? And I have to say, you can’t have been serious about the grocery store, right?”

I laughed and nodded. “The grocery store was only a drop in the bucket. I’m lucky enough to have made a good deal of money from my hard work over the years,” I admitted. Rylee’s eyes widened and she leaned in a little closer. I couldn’t help but indulge myself in her surprise.

“When you have a billion dollars, money kind of stops being an issue,” I confessed.

“A billion dollars!” Rylee cried loudly, waking up both Robin and Jayden with a start. I couldn’t resist laughing at all three of them.

When the plane finally landed, there was a car waiting for us and I guided my new family toward it with a smile. “This car will be taking us straight to a resort on the coast of the island that is known for it’s exquisite views and delicious food,” I told them. “I’ve rented a family villa there for all of us.”

“Oh, how exciting!” Robin exclaimed.

Rylee remained rather silent for the entire journey which worried me. I couldn’t help but cross my fingers and hope that things would go well during this vacation, otherwise, I could kiss goodbye to everything I wanted: Rylee, Jayden, everything.

No matter the circumstances, I had to admit that Hawaii was beautiful. The private villa Spencer had rented for us was beautifully decorated with lush furnishings and plenty of comfortable chairs, sofas, and loungers for us to laze around on. There were four bedrooms which was more than enough to occupy all of us. There were even four bathrooms, one for each bedroom! My mom’s room had the most powerful shower I had ever seen while the mine had a bathtub that looked like it could fit at least four people in it. The whole place was twice the size of my mother’s house and I couldn’t quite believe we were going to be staying here for the entire weekend.

When I stepped outside, I noticed there was a hot tub on the decking, but that wasn’t even the best part. We had direct access to a picturesque beach with shining white sand and a beautiful, sparking sea of aqua with foaming white waves which lapped at the shore. I wasn’t quite ready for the beach yet. I wanted to unpack and explore the villa a little more, but Jayden had other plans.

“Beach now, Mommy!” he cried excitedly. “I wanna see fisheees! Now, now, now!”

I heard Spencer’s rumbling laugh from behind me. “I can take him outside to explore while the two of you get settled in?”

For a moment, I hesitated. I wasn’t used to the idea of Spencer and Jayden spending time together yet, but at the same time, I wanted to give Jayden a chance to learn who his father was. Eventually, I nodded. “Sure, just don’t go too far, okay? And be back soon!” I told him.

“We will,” Spencer replied and gave me a look of understanding. I knew he would be respectful of my boundaries with Jayden. After all, he had to if he wanted to keep in contact with both of us. I was here and I had given Spencer the chance to prove he was true to his word. The ball was in his court now and all I had to do was sit and wait.
