“Oh. Sorry. I didn’t realize.” Ant instinctively turned away, but then quickly turned back. “Hey, do we know each other?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Really? You look really familiar.”

“Nope. Don’t think so.” She shook her head dismissively and put her face back in her phone, effectively ending the conversation.

“Sure. Sorry to bother you.”

Ant went back to the task at hand. Working out the main outline of what would become her pitch. It was a one page summary, more or less, of the whole project. But even as she did she couldn’t help but steal a few more glances at the girl. Something about her was so familiar. And then it happened.

That bitchy blonde prima donna lifted up her hair, made a kissy face, aimed her phone and took a little selfie. And in that moment Ant knew exactly who she was. She was the girl in the photos. The one with Romeo.

“Huh,” said Ant. Not as a question, like in huh? What’d you say? But as a revelation. Like in huh. Now I get where I know this slut from.

“Something else?” Bree asked snottily.

“No. Not really. I just remembered where I know you from.”

“And where was that?”

“You went out with a guy I know. Not too long ago. Met him in a bar. Sat on his lap.” Ant leaned back in her chair and finished. “You made out with him and took a bunch of pictures.”

“Kind of,” Ant said. Then she glanced off out the window. She probably didn’t even know she did it. It was just a flash. Just a quick memory she went back to for a split second.

But Bree caught it, and she saw an opening. So she added, “Yeah, he’s awesome. I saw him again the other night.”

“Really?”

“Yup.”

Nope. She was lying. She hadn’t seen Romeo again since that night at the bar. Not once.

“Well, good for you,” said Ant, gathering her stuff. She couldn’t be there anymore. Couldn’t be around this girl any more. So she packed up her things and headed for the door.

“Hey,” said Bree.

Ant stopped and turned. She looked at Bree expectantly.

Then Bree smiled a bitchy smile. “You want me to say hi for you?”

“No,” said Ant. “I don’t.” Then she stepped out of the place and onto the street.

Ant went straight from Buhz to work. She wasn’t due to be in for at least another hour, but she had nowhere else to go and she was eager to keep busy. She opened the store, put on some music, made a pot of coffee and proceeded to start prepping the counter for the inevitable lunch rush. As the morning wore on, more employees showed up.

“You’ve been busy,” Nikki said as she tossed her bag behind the counter and grabbed an apron.

“Oh, yeah… I got here a little early.”

“I see that. Anything left to do?”

“Not really. You could check the salts but that’s about it.”

“Great,” said Nikki, as she literally laid herself down on the counter, spread her arms wide and settled her head on the cool, stai
