The girls looked at each other. Forgot everything except the fact they were family, cousins, sisters almost, and turned on him.

“No!”

“No?”

“No.”

“Take us back to the dock,” demanded Ant.

“Now,” seconded Nikki.

He’d had just about enough of all of them - the Mayor, the cops, the Monty’s, even his own stupid family. And as he saw the party in full swing below him, Tyler smiled at the genius of his plan. He would slip down there unseen, release a plague of crickets upon them all, and be gone before anyone even knew he was there. It was perfect.

He had arrived at the top of the drive. Put his car in park, turned off the lights and lowered the radio. He was trying to slip into stealth mode, to be as quiet and unseen as possible. Of course the crickets were having none of that. The din of their chirping growing louder by the minute.

He leaned back in his seat and cracked another beer. The remaining two held together by the plastic carrier ring on the seat beside him. He was content to just sit and watch the party for the moment. Content to let those losers down there enjoy their last few minutes of calm before the storm. Content in his plan, his genius.

Tyler looked around at the expanse of nature surrounding him. He counted himself lucky. Despite how loud the crickets were, they were basically hidden in plain sight. Their cacophonic chorus was exactly where it belonged. Out in the open. At night. In a lush, grassy park.

The same park where the bats came to feed each and every night. The bats that were at this very moment headed out to hunt for food. The chirping of the crickets just beginning to reach their little bat ears.

Romeo placed another four finished sandwich plates on the table. They were gone in seconds. “Keep ‘em comin’ guys.”

“I need more onions,” Father Frank called from the grill.

“Got it,” said Benny as he rushed to the cooler and grabbed another couple of quart containers.

Frank plated up another six. Romeo set them out. They were in the groove now. Working together like a well oiled machine.

“Excuse me young man.” It was a heavyset woman in a flowered print dress and blocky white heels. “Can I get one with no onions please?”

“Uh, sure…” he said hesitantly. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to oblige her. It’s just that when you start taking special orders in this type of situation it had the propensity to snowball. Before you know it everyone is making requests. Think you’re in the weeds now? Just wait. They’ll be coming at you from all angles.

Hey can I get one with no cheese, extra onions, double meat and a side of tomatoes? We don’t have tomatoes. Can you make mine a low carb special - extra cheese, extra meat, no bun, just a plate, oh and maybe some lettuce. Sorry no lettuce. Can you get some? Where? The store. We’re in the middle of a park. Oh, okay, then make it… Blah, blah, blah… It’ll never end .

He winked at her and whispered. “Just don’t tell anyone, okay?”

“Mum’s the word she said.” Then she put two fingers to her lips and zippered her mouth shut.

Benny set Frank up with another pan of cheese and grabbed a couple more plates.

“You know they’re out on the lake,” he said.

Romeo had no idea what he was talking about.

“They’re out on the lake. Both of them.”

“Who?

“The girls.”

“What girls?”

“The girls,” reiterated Benny. They’re out on the lake. Both of them. With that guy.”

“What guy?”
