She had sat in that bar for too long. Nursing a second glass of wine and splitting her time between checking her phone and watching the front door. But, he never showed. Reluctant to go straight home with everything going on there this evening, she headed out.

Ant ended up at the movies. It was as good a way to kill time as any, and it was cool, dark and anonymous. She really wasn’t up for running into anyone she knew.

With a slim choice between the latest chick centric rom-com or dude focused disaster flick she chose the one with all the explosions. Anything to get as far away from love and romance as possible. At least for the remainder of the evening.

So there she sat. In the movie. In the dark. With the biggest bucket of popcorn they sold on her lap. In the last seat of the last row. For a good two hours and seventeen minutes. Trying not to think about it. Trying to remain positive. Trying to remember that, at the end of the day, stuff happens.

By the time she got home the house was quiet. She crept up to her room. Closed the door and slipped into bed. Now, with the lights out and her phone in her hand, none of the thousand questions she posed to herself about the unexpectedly disappointing events of the evening mattered. The only thing that mattered, the only question she really needed answered now was, was he worth a second chance.

Ok

Great

Let me take you out tomorrow night

Can’t

She still couldn’t believe she had to go out with that winking cheeseball.

Why not?

He regretted writing it as soon as he did. Why not? Who was he to ask her why? It was none of his business and he knew it. He was afraid he’d overstepped but he was so excited that she’d agreed he’d just blurted it out.

Not important.

Was it really? Or was that just a polite way of telling him to mind his own business. He couldn’t be sure so he pressed on.

Important enough to skip meeting up with me

Important doesn’t mean unavoidable

(wink emoji)

He liked that. He liked that she just threw his own words right back at him.

Fair enough

Another night then?

Sure

I guess this is goodnight then

Goodnight

And that was it. No one really hangs up after a texting. The conversation just kind of stops. Even so, Romeo stayed where he was and stared at his phone. Hoping to hear just one more word from her. Hoping it really wasn’t over.

“Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey,” sang Mrs Cap as she burst into Ant’s room and threw open the curtains.

Ant squealed as she squinched her eyes shut and reflexively pulled the covers up over her head. “Hey??!”

“Come on, come on. We have so little to do and so much time.” Mrs Cap hustled through Ant’s closet, grabbing handfuls of clothes and tossing them on the bed beside her. “Wait, strike that, reverse it,” she said, laughing heartily.

“Stop it,” cried a voice from beneath the blankets.
