Then she heard her phone ring. She fished it out of her bag. It was Romeo. She smiled.

“Hello?”

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

“How’s things?”

“Hold on,” she said.

Ant hopped off the stool and glanced at her mother. Mrs Cap was in her glory being pampered and prepped and telling anyone who’d listen about how her daughter had a date tonight with the Deputy Mayor.

“Oh, yes. He came over to our house last night. We shared snacks and wine. He’s actually a very nice boy. ”

Confident that her mom would be busy for the foreseeable future, Ant slipped out the front door.

“Um… Who is this?” she asked.

Ant knew exactly who it was on the other end. But, she saw no reason to make it easy on him. Maybe it was the fact that her blood sugar was lower than a limbo stick from the lack of sustenance at this point. Or maybe she was still stinging, just the tiniest little bit, from being stood up last night. Either way, she was going to have some fun.

“You don’t know who this is?”

“Leo?”

“No.”

“Ryan?”

“No.”

“I give up.”

“It’s Romeo.”

“Romeo? Romeo who?”

“Okay, I get it. You’re obviously still a little mad at me about last night and I don’t blame you. You deserve much better than that.”

“I do?”

“Yes, you do. In fact, that’s why I called. Actually there’s two reasons why I called.”

“What’s the first?”

“Well, I thought I might give you another chance to let me make it up to you, tonight.”

“I’d love to but I can’t tonight. I have a… a thing.” She still couldn’t believe she had to have dinner with that winking cheeseball.

“Yeah, you said that. But, I’ve heard you should always give a woman a second chance to change her mind.”

“I can’t. Sorry.”

“No worries. I’ll tell you what. I’m going to be home all night. I’ll text you the address, just in case. If not, maybe we can go out again sometime soon. ”

“I’d like that.”

“Okay then. I guess I’ll talk to you later.”
