“Let me go!” yelled Marco again as he struggled to get past Romeo.

“No. This isn’t happening.”

And then, Tyler hauled off and hit Marco with everything he had. He jumped up, and using Romeo as leverage, nailed Marco, hard, right in the face.

Marco went limp and fell to his knees as blood rushed from his mouth.

Benny dropped the box and tried to tackle Tyler. But Tyler threw him to the ground.

“That’s enough,” said Romeo.

Marco was hurt. He was probably going to end up with a serious fat lip. Maybe a black eye. And through all the blood it looked like he might have lost a tooth. Hopefully his nose wasn’t broken.

“No it isn’t,” said Tyler. He grabbed a can of blue spray paint off the sidewalk. “It isn’t nearly enough.”

They could all hear the tell tale rattle of the ball banging around inside the can as Tyler shook it up. Like a fat rattlesnake gearing up to strike.

Tyler gestured toward Benny. It was obvious what he had in mind. Gary Green Shirt got Benny to his feet and held him tight. Tyler shook the can again.

Romeo stared him down. “Don’t do it.”

“Do what?” taunted Tyler. “This?”

As the first drops of paint spit out, Romeo lost his cool and brutally nailed him with a spinning back kick smack to the center of his solar plexus. Tyl

er flew across the sidewalk and into a dangling light fixture hanging haphazardly in front of the restaurant. Cap had been meaning to fix it for years but had never gotten around to it.

As the light shattered the can ruptured. Shards of glass and spurts of blue paint showered down on the side of Tyler’s face and neck. As his head struck the brick wall he blacked out and crumpled to the ground.

“Awesome shot!” yelled Marco, who was now up and around, spitting blood as he talked.

Romeo looked at what he’d done. He didn’t think it was so awesome. Tyler looked bad.

Then lights in the surrounding apartments started coming on and folks began shouting from the windows. Soon they heard a siren in the distance .

“We gotta go,” said Marco, blood dribbling down his chin.

“We can’t leave,” said Romeo.

“No. Come on. We gotta go.”

“Hey. You there. What happened?” It was just some random passerby, but it was obvious that a crowd was going to start forming any minute.

Marco pulled Romeo away. “Come on. We gotta go now.”

Moments later Marco, Benny and Romeo were running down the street away from Cap’s. About five blocks in they came across a busy bar called The Cask Club. A place they’d yet to try in all their short years of drinking.

Marco stopped at the entrance. “Hey, let’s duck in here.”

Romeo came up behind him. “Maybe we should go back.”

Marco insisted. “No, come on. We should get off the street.”

Marco pulled open the door and walked in. Benny quickly followed. Romeo looked back toward Cap’s. He could see the lights and hear the sirens. Reluctantly he followed.

The place was cool and dark, and substantially more swanky than they were used to. The Cask Club was one of those highfalutin, fancy cocktail, brandy snifter type places with a preponderance of high end bottles above the ornate wooden bar and the scent of money in the air. Which was a change from the funky, day old, stale beer smell they had quickly grown so used to.
