“Yes!” said Alex jumping up. “I so have to go.”

“Hurry back.” Marco searched the bar for the waitress, eager to get another round and keep the party going.

Benny picked up on what Marco was trying to do and peered around, also looking for the waitress.

Romeo was the only one that seemed to notice that the girls were walking to the front of the bar, when the sign to the restrooms was clearly in the back .

A minute later the girls were outside and on the sidewalk. A minute after that Patrick walked out.

“How’d you do?” he asked them.

Alex held up her phone. “Just look.”

He took her phone and gave it a quick look. Then he texted himself all the photos as well as the video. It took a few seconds for the files to download, but soon enough he heard the tell tale ding. “Good job.”

Patrick reached in his pocket and pulled out two crisp hundreds. Then he handed one to each of the girls. “Thank you.”

“So where to now?” asked Bree.

“Well, there’s a little place around the corner right near my apartment. How about we…”

His phone rang. When he saw the name on the screen he put his hand up, signaling to the girls to keep quiet. Then he answered it. “Good evening Mr Mayor.”

“What happened?” demanded Cap as he yanked back the curtain surrounding the hospital bed.

“He’s ok. He’s ok,” insisted Mrs Cap. “It’s just a scratch. His jaw is fine. It’s fine…”

They were in the emergency room. There was a bank of beds on the far left wall, opposite and down the hall from the entrance. Each bed was flanked by a multitude of monitoring machines, and surrounded by a moveable cloth curtain. Tyler was in the fifth one. Next to a guy who had just blown off half his pinky trying to light the last of his leftover 4th of July fireworks.

“Tell me what happened,” Cap demanded again.

“I’ll tell you what happened. It was those provolosers.”

“Who exactly?”

Mrs Cap grabbed her baby’s hand. “Who cares as long as he’s all right.”

“All right? I’m not all right. Look at me.”

He didn’t look all right. He was bandaged from the top of his head to down around and over his left eye and ear. Blood had soaked through and dried in the gauze, mostly around his temple, creating a pattern that looked vaguely like a dog biscuit. But what really stuck out was all the blue paint on his cheek and neck.

“Oh my sweet boy,” cried Mrs Cap as she scooped in and pulled him to her chest. “That’s it,” she added. “You’re moving back in with us.”

“Ohnooumnut.”

Tyler had said something but Mrs Cap’s ample bosom had muffled most of it.

She let him free. “What?”

“I said, oh no I’m not.”

“Oh yes you are.”

“Ma!…”

“Tell him.”
