“Knew things?”

“Yeah,” I went on. “Not just intuition-wise either, but things she couldn’t really have access to. I saw her do and say things that made people turn instantly pale. Once I saw her tell someone where something was. Something they’d been looking for for a long time. And then they actually found it, and they came back crying hysterically, but they were tears of joy.”

“Holy shit,” said Zane. “I just got a chill.”

“And you lead ghost tours,” I smirked at him.

The table went silent for a moment, so I sipped my coffee.

“What was her name?” Erik asked softly.

“My grandmother?”

“Yes.”

“Mary.”

He interlaced his tattooed fingers with mine reassuringly and gave me a gentle smile. “That’s a pretty name.”

The knot in my stomach loosened a bit. “It is,” I agreed. “Or… was. Or—”

“And she taught you how to do this?” Zane asked.

“Most of it,” I admitted. “She wanted me to go further down that path, though. Kept trying to show me how to use my ‘inner eye’, but I never thought I had one. I just didn’t feel it. Not the way she did.”

The check arrived, somewhat breaking the spell. Zane and Erik both reached for it, but Erik won out. Zane left the tip, waving me away as I reached for my wallet.

“We asked you to breakfast, remember?”

“Uh huh,” I smiled. “And something about… taking me for a ride?”

“Oh yeah,” Erik grinned. “That, plus—”

Two very different beeps went off at the same time, causing both my breakfast dates to reach for the phones simultaneously. Then, almost in stereo:

“Shit.”

My heart sank a little. “What is it?”

Erik and Zane looked at each other. Their expressions were grim disappointment.

“We just got a job.”

“A job?”

“We have to work,” Zane explained. “Someone called the moving company. They need guys immediately.”

“And those guys are us,” Erik lamented.

I took one last swig of my really good coffee, then used the napkin to dab at my lips.

“No biggie,” I said.

“Savannah, we’re really sorry—”

“Stop,” I cut Erik off. “No need to be. You have to work. I get it.”

“But—”
