“The kiss wasn’t for the scene,” Jack told her softly.

Davina let out a tiny sigh of delight, which made Jack smile.

“Davy, Davy, Davy, you’re turning me inside out.”

“We need to start that again, if we want to get it done while we still have light,” Derek said from the driveway.

It took a minute for Davina to focus on him.

“We’ll leave it as it is, the kiss adds something, don’t you think?”

It had certainly taken her breath away.

“Good,” Jack stood. “I’m out of here.”

Davina wished she could think of a reason to make him stay, but nothing came to mind. She looked on Jack with undisguised longing as he walked away.

“He’s the gardener, right?” Derek said beside her.

From the scowl on his face he wasn’t impressed. Davina wanted to say that he was much more than that.

“You can snap out of character now, Davina. You still have that lovesick look on your face.” He leaned over her where she sat. “If you want passion, I can give it to you.”

“Good to know,” Davina said as she slipped out from under him. “The boys will be here soon, I better get the next scene set up.”

And then she ran from Derek. When she hesitated at the door, she turned to see Jack watching her from the garden and Derek growling at Jack from the veranda. Great. A testosterone clash, exactly what she needed. She left the boys playing a mental game of whose is bigger, while she changed out of her acting clothes.

Jack didn’t like the way Ken Doll was watching Davina. Didn’t like it one bit. He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialled Andy.

“Hey, can you run another background check for me?”

“Well hello to you too, Jack,” Andy drawled.

“What are you, my mother? Can you run a check or not?”

“What white rabbit are you chasing this time?”

Jack continued to scowl at Ken Doll.

“Wow, a literary reference and people say you can’t read.”

“I saw the movie,” Andy sighed, “so who is it and why do you want to know?”

“Some guy hanging around Davina. I don’t like the look of him. His name’s—” he was about to say Ken Doll. “Wait a minute.”

“Hoi,” he shouted at Ken Doll. “What’s your name?”

The guy stood straight.

“Derek Gibbs,” he shouted. “Why do you want to know?”

“Just being friendly.” Yeah, right.

“His name is Derek Gibbs, he works at Brighton Buzz and he’s a cameraman. Apart from that, all I know about him is that he likes his leather trousers on the tight side and I’m pretty sure he wears makeup.”

“Well,” Andy said, drawing out the word. Jack could almost see the smile he had on his face.

“Well what?”
