“Yes,” Kellan replied, never missing a beat.

“How do you know no one followed us?”

“So far, no one has,” Kellan said, glancing behind them. “But we’ll keep driving until we’re sure.”

“There was a bomb in that dress box. Wasn’t there?”

Reason changed his grip on t

he steering wheel. Kellan leaned back in his seat once more.

“So that’s the way it’s going to be? You expect me to trust you but then you act as if you can’t be trusted.”

“There was a bomb,” Reason said, glancing at her. “But there won’t be a bomb in the future.”

“How do you know?” Jade pressed.

“Because none of us will come back to North Carolina until Sarsarone and all his men are dead.” Reason held her hand. “You let us worry about keeping you safe.”

“Will I ever be safe? Will Nory?”

Kellan squeezed her shoulder. “You’ll both be protected. More importantly, you will be loved.”

“And that’s a promise,” Reason added.

It was a promise Jade accepted, one she would forever cherish. With it came a commitment, one Reason and Kellan would undoubtedly formalize soon. And in turn, Jade would spend her lifetime proving herself to them, through tests and trials and training and punishment. Through it all, she would reap the best of rewards, too—a wonderful love and commitment destined to stand forever.
