Breaking the kiss as she looked up at him, she said hoarsely, “I love you, I do, but…Can we…” Her stomach turned over, and she took a step back. “Can I have a moment to…”

“Hey, are you okay?” The concern on his face was strong, and he ran his hands through his thick hair. “Bobbi, have I got this all wrong?”

His eyes flattened, and he frowned. But he didn’t yell or put up a fuss, just moved away from her so she could breathe. Bobbi exhaled and attempted a smile. “We’re going to be okay, Shane. Don’t look like that.”

“What’s going on?”

She ran damp hands over the tops of her thighs and thought of all those pretty words and speeches she’d practiced on the flight back from New Waterford.

“I left the other day, as you know. I didn’t tell you where I went because I knew you’d have questions or call Logan or stir up a pot of trouble when I didn’t want anyone to know I was home.”

“You went back to New Waterford?”

“I did.” She licked suddenly dry lips. “You might want to sit down for this.”

His frown deepened. “I’m fine standing, thanks. What the hell is going on?”

“I had a doctor’s appointment that I couldn’t miss.”

Instantly, his frown disappeared, and concern and fear flooded his eyes. “I’m fine. It’s nothing like…nothing like Jane or anything.”

“Then what is it?”

“It’s hot in here, isn’t it?” She looked toward the window. “Would you mind?”

“The AC is full-blast, Bobbi. It’s as cold as a fridge in here.”

“Right.” She shivered, and her teeth began to chatter. “Shane, I’m pregnant.”

His head jerked. “What was that?”

“I’m pregnant,” she whispered. She thought of Gramps and added in a rush, “We’re pregnant. Us. You and me.”

“Pregnant.” He looked stunned, and later, Bobbi Jo would wish she’d had a camera to catch his expression, because it was priceless. “I don’t understand.”

“Our last argument ended in…”

“Angry sex.”

“Right.” She tried to smile. “It usually does, and well, I’ve always been kind of irregular, and I never thought anything about being late until I arrived here and vomited all over Coral’s shoes.”

Shit, that must have been a sight.”

“You have no idea.” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ears. “I realized that I was really late and bought a pregnancy test. It was positive. I went home to our doctor for confirmation, and because, well, when a woman is pregnant, she has to take these special vitamins and stuff. They’re big, like horse pills and I…”

Her words trailed off because Shane was right in front of her again, and the look in his eyes was one she’d never seen before. It was intense and possessive and…

“You’re having my baby?”

“What a lovely way to say how much I love you.”

Shane cocked an eyebrow.

“That’s from a song,” she said. He shook his head. “Paul Anka?” Bobbi said. “‘She’s Having My Baby’?”

“Shut up and let me kiss you,” he growled, pulling her close and kissing her until she was breathless. Until her pretty pale blue dress ended up a crumple of fabric on the floor next to Shane’s T-shirt and jeans. He didn’t stop kissing her until he was deep inside her once more, looking down into her eyes with that new look she knew she was going to love seeing every single day.
