You weren’t. Dane was just after what he could get.

An easy fuck, and he’d been determined to say and do whatever he could to get it.

Her feelings weren’t real. She understood that now.

Damon though … this wasn’t a young woman’s infatuation. This was something more, far deeper than she could have ever imagined, and it fucking terrified her.

Chapter Five

Damon continued to throw punch after punch at the bag dangling in front of him. One way or another, he needed to relieve this … energy. Last night, he’d been so close to going inside Teri’s room. He heard what she’d been doing.

Did she even realize she cried his name when she came? The sound had been sweet, precious music to his ears, only to be completely fucking destroyed in the next second as she heard her cries.

His heart broke.

What the fuck had happened to his fun-loving Teri?

He needed to do something about it, but playing this game wasn’t easy. Damon wasn’t in this for a quick fuck. Plenty of the club whores had offered him free pussy, but he’d turned them all down.

There was only one woman he wanted, and she seemed so far out of reach, it made him angry.

There was no way any of the guys would have walked away from a girl taking care of her business last night. Where the fuck was his balls?

“Whoa, dude, what did the bag do?” Pixie asked, coming into the makeshift gym they’d installed in the basement of the clubhouse.

“Fuck off, Pixie.” He wasn’t in the mood to play this game or to talk to any of the brothers.

“Wow, okay. Someone has some serious issues.”

Damon paused in pummeling the bag to turn toward Pixie, who’d taken a seat on the steps leading down to the basement. “What the fuck do you want?”

“Came to check on you.” Pixie lifted his watch. “Been down here an hour and a half. Was worried the bag had eaten you.”

“How do you have a kid?” Damon asked, turning back to the bag.

“The usual way. Know how to fuck my woman good. So what’s with the mood?”

Damon took a deep breath and tried to ignore the asshole behind him. Of all the men to get his happily-ever-after, why did it have to be Pixie? The guy was a grade-A asshole. The only time Damon had seen him be in any way sensible was when he was around Suzie. He also couldn’t grasp why Suzie would want anything to do with Pixie.

She was a nice woman.

Pixie wasn’t a nice man.

Their marriage shouldn’t work.

He thought about Teri. Was that what held her back? A fear of them not being compatible?

No. He refused to believe that.

Grabbing the bag, he held it still and took a deep breath.

“I’m here in case you want to talk about whatever it is you’re going through,” Pixie said.

“I don’t need to talk about anything.”

“Fine. Continue hitting the bag. I’m sure it has all the answers.”

Damon spun around to glare at his club brother. “Stop it, asshole. I get that you like to meddle in other people’s lives, but I’ve got no interest in sharing.”

Pixie chuckled. “You think I love meddling? Fuck, no. I can’t stand people. They’re all assholes, but I’m going to have a magical guess about this.” He pressed two fingers against each side of his temple, eyes closed, and hummed.

“If you don’t get the fuck out of here soon, I am going to kick your ass.”

“I see a woman. A very pretty woman.”

Damon rolled his eyes.

The only reason they put up with Pixie was because he was James’s brother. If he’d been anyone else, he would have been fucking slapped a long time ago, and a slap was putting it mildly.

“She’s … Teri,” Pixie said, opening his eyes and lowering his hands. “So, what’s the problem?”

“My problem is you. Leave me alone.”

“Okay, bro, I just want to point out I’m happily married with a kid. A very pretty kid. I’m a daddy. Something tells me you’d very much like to have a similar setup with Teri, but for some reason, you’ve been dancing around that woman for a long time. What gives?”

“The only reason you’re a daddy is because Suzie feels sorry for you.”

Pixie pouted. “Actually, the only reason I’m a daddy is I made it happen. Totally popped the condoms, but I digress. Suzie knew the truth and we’ve all learned from our past mistakes. Moving on back to Teri. Why don’t you just tell her how you feel?”

“I’m not going to have this conversation with you.” Damon moved away from the punching bag. He was covered in sweat and cooling down fast.

Having Pixie in the room wasn’t helping.

“Why not? Do you see another club brother around?”

“I wasn’t going to have this conversation with anyone, Pixie. You know that.” He took a step toward him, ready to head toward the shower.
