They all go silent, waiting for a fresh round of firings, but it’s only when people cross Brynn that heads roll.

Plus, I can’t afford to lose any more help today.

I was planning on taking the next few days off, maybe even the next few weeks off.

Just Brynn and me.

Getting to know a lot more about what we can do together without using my desk for a bed.

Now it looks like I have a real issue on my hands, and one I can’t leave as it is.

The same goes for Brynn too, but security and IT tell me that there’s been a breach on most of our servers, cloud files, the whole bit.

It’s never happened before.

Nobody would dare mess with me. Or so I thought.

Things change, Pearce. The world changes.

My team echoes back some of what I’m thinking but really my mind is in the next room.

And so is my body. With hers.

Naked under a shower, where I’d rather be.

“We can’t be sure if it was her, or if she even did anything while she was in there. But it fits in with the timing,” My head of security, Mack tells me.

“Also…” he starts to add but decides he doesn’t want to say anything until I press him for it.

“Also, sir? HR did some checks at our request, turns out this, uh… Denise?” he says, checking a notepad in his hand. “She’s never banked a single paycheck since she started work here.”

I give him a blank look. I didn’t even know we still paid people by check.

“Well. Fix it,” I growl, glad when they all decide not to argue the point and just leave.

Leave me to the only thing I want to do right now.

Brynn.

I don’t exactly help the situation by biting her head off.

Practically demanding Brynn remember and tell me everything that happened once ‘Denise’ was in my office.

If that’s even the woman’s name at all.

If she even is a woman. Could be anyone by all accounts.

The golden rule of my office is: If I don’t ask you in, don’t go inside.

Any and every employee knows that. Even the cleaners are screened to the highest security levels.

Or so I thought.

Jesus.

I don’t mean to startle Brynn or to make her angry again but I manage to calm her.

Apologizing for being so intense with her, and more than glad when she lets me know I’m forgiven before we’re interrupted yet again.

I need to get us outta here. Today is gonna be like this all day otherwise.

I was expecting just one more interruption, but it’s Mack again. Not to be unexpected but I tell him how things are gonna be today before he opens his mouth.

“Once we’re done here, Mack, I’m leaving this in your hands. Got it?” I tell him, not pleased when I notice his eyes moving from the floor all the way up to Brynn as I’m speaking.

“Got it?” I growl, catching his attention, finally.

“Uh, yes sir. It’s just...” he begins, moving his eyes over to Brynn again.

“What is it?” I ask, my patience wearing thin already.

“We just need to account for everyone is all, sir. Like who was in or near your office earlier?” he finally says, his eyes narrowing on Brynn now.

“I’m leaving shortly, Mack. I’ll be out of the office for the rest of today, maybe the next few days.” I sigh with irritation, pinching my brow. Noting Brynn’s look of discomfort.

Stifling a groan as I realize she thinks I’m leaving her behind somehow.

“This is Brynn, and she’s with me. Mine.” I make sure and tell Mack so she can hear it too.

“I don’t have any reason to believe she’s involved in a breach of our systems in any way. That’s all,” I tell him firmly.

The head of security nods in agreement, trusting my word over his own opinions, and makes to leave even though I can sense he still has plenty more to tell me.

Whatever it is, it can wait.

Brynn is all that matters right now.

I follow him to the door, ushering him out in time for what should cheer Brynn up upon arriving.

“A change of clothes,” I announce, waving away the staff and taking charge of the rack on wheels myself before closing and locking the office door again.

“We won’t be disturbed anymore, I promise,” I tell her, watching her eyes move to the rack of garments I’ve had sent up.

“Is there anything you can’t make happen by snapping your fingers?” she asks dryly. Creasing her mouth and frowning before she lets her shoulders drop.

“Sorry,” she murmurs, moving over to check out the clothes.

“I’m just not an easy person to… Fit for,” she says, suddenly looking hopeful when she notices that everything on the rack is just how it should be. Her size.

“But how did you know?” she asks, looking amazed.

I shrug and then have to tell her.
