Page 27 of His Little Stowaway

The side where people live that have no place else to run to.

The not so nice side of the street.

Growling to myself I punch the wheel and curse, feeling stupid for pushing her into the idea she had to or even should go back at all.

“Idiot!” I snarl to myself, braking hard and spinning the wheels as I cut across four lanes of traffic to go back when something else catches the corner of my eye.

I’ll be fucking damned…

Having only seen her briefly this morning I might normally overlook her on my way to who I really want to see.

But that big hair. Those heels. Her mysterious disappearance after I fired her?

It’s secret agent Barbie alright. But it’s whose arm she’s on that sees me almost skid when I hit the brakes.

Mike Whitman.

My second in command. The man I’d trust with my—

The man I trusted with my whole empire.

Son of a bitch.

Making a note of the building they enter, I also notice he doesn’t look like he’s making a citizen’s arrest either.

My eyes narrow, and a thousand things occur to me at once.

At the top of that list is still Brynn though.

Always will be.

I need to get back to her quickly so we can get out of here before we’re spotted.

Whitman’s no dummy. He has his own security and special ways of doing things.

Ex-military man. Old school Navy Seal some people have rumored. But all I know is I’ve spotted him with the number one suspect after our systems were hacked earlier today.

If it was any other day I could devote all my energy to it. I might even try to tell myself that Whitman’s acting for my best interests, maybe using the girl as part of his plan.

But no. I know that look. I know how he was looking at her. He’s fallen about as far left from the tree as anyone can.

I just have to catch him in the act. Prove it.

But today is supposed to be our day. Brynn and me. Every day from now on if I can get it right.

She looks stunned, like a rabbit in the headlights when I screech the car to a halt right in front of her before she can cross back to the nicer side of the street.

I’ve caught her out. I can see where she lived, imagine what she’s running from.

Her sullen look tells me she hasn’t packed the box she carries herself either.

I don’t need every little detail for someone to show me they’ve had it hard and they’ve had enough.

Without a word about it, I take her box and put it in the back before holding her close for a moment, kissing the top of her head, and helping her into the car.

She opens her mouth to say something, but there’s no need. I forgive her for keeping it from me. I understand why she’d do something like that.

Plus, I’ve got bigger fish to fry right now.

“I just saw that woman, from the office this morning,” I tell Brynn through gritted teeth.

She clicks her tongue and lets out a gasp of dismay.

“I knew it!” she cries out. “I knew there was something going on.”

I glance at her sideways, wondering what she means. How she could possibly know.

Finding a space up ahead, I pull in sharp and hard, making us both lurch forward before the car stops.

“Alright, tell me what you know,” I ask, turning to face her. “About Whitman and that woman,” I urge her impatiently.

If I’m behind the eight ball on this I need the facts, not to chase my tail.

“The woman from the office this morning… Denise,” I explain, waiting for an answer, but Brynn only looks more confused than ever.

“I saw her for the first time this morning, Brynn. Next, I know my second in command tells me we’ve been hacked and she’s the prime suspect.” I rasp.

“Then, just now. I saw them both going into a building a few doors down from where you live,” I add. Not wanting to even bring it up.

“Whitman?” Brynn asks. “The same guy from the phone call earlier?”

“Yes,” I exclaim, throwing my hands in the air. “The same guy who wants me out of town for the next few days. He’s meeting with that woman right down the street.”

We sit in silence for a while.

Brynn is still feeling awkward about her old place, but my mind’s racing now.

I’ve never felt so much excitement in one day.

It’s like the good old days, only better because Brynn is right here with me.

With her, by my side, I feel like I can tackle anything and anyone and come out on top.

“Wha- What are you gonna do?” she finally asks, creasing her mouth as she looks over at me.

“What are we gonna do, you mean?” I ask, feeling my whole body relax as my mouth forms a wide smile.
