How I hear every employee or competitor mocks me but only when my back’s turned.

I’ve got respect, sure. But only because I can hire or fire, make or break a person or a business with a word. With a phone call or even just a look.

Except for little miss making me hard, here…

What am I gonna do with you, Brynn?

“You never told me your last name,” I observe, lowering my voice to a near whisper as I spot my building coming into view.

“Does it matter?” she huffs, sniffing back a tear again before shooting me a cold look.

“I know your name though,” she adds bitterly. “Pearce Masters.”

Hearing her say it without the affection I know I have for her already makes my chest ache.

Looking out the window I see the name on top of the building, glowing red in letters twenty feet high.

“Well, here we are,” I say aloud. More to myself than to Brynn.

I can’t keep her against her will, but I don’t want to find out what I’ll do if she does take off once we stop.

She eyes the wallet, not even for a moment before she leans over and presses it into both my hands before starting to ease herself out of my coat.

“Thanks for the ride. And my last name’s Treloar, Brynn Treloar,” she murmurs. “For what it’s worth.”

Her eyes widen with intense and sudden fear as the limo breaks without warning.

There’s the squeal of another car’s tires and the honking of horns.

I almost wait for the crash but there isn’t one, thankfully.

Just Monday morning traffic.

My hands reach out for her by instinct. Gripping her as she lurches forward, covering her back with my hands and pulling her into my lap.

Safe and sound.

She gasps from the shock, but I feel her plush little body soften against mine.

Something else of mine presses into her side as I cock more than my brow.

“You don’t have to go anywhere, Brynn,” I murmur, willing her to stay with my eyes. Just in case my body isn’t telling her enough without words.

Feeling my face gravitating towards hers as I figure this might be my only chance to state my case.

To get her to stay.

To show her straight off the bat just what she’s really doing to me.

“Everything alright back there?” A voice interrupts, making her jump but I let out a sigh of frustration as I feel her moving back off my lap.

“Fine, Simon.” I let the driver know through the intercom.

Just fine…

“Oh. Park us down below, will you?” I ask him while I have him on speaker.

“I’ll take the private elevator today,” I add, moving my eyes back over Brynn’s body.

Able to see much more of her now without my coat obstructing the view.

“Ashamed to be seen with me?” she asks haughtily, but her flushed cheeks tell me it’s our little collision that’s made her blush. Not the fear of me being seen with her.

“I don’t always use the front door,” I tell her, knowing somehow that she’ll stay.

For a while at least.

“Plus, I get the impression you want to keep a low profile?” I add, already wanting to reach out for her again.

The charge I felt from her body against mine already has me hooked.

A strange look passes over her face, and I ask what’s wrong.

“Nothing,” she mutters. Then, “Actually, you don’t have a bathroom close by, do you? I’m kinda desperate now,” she confesses.

I nod straight away, knowing I have at least one thing she needs by her own admission right now.

Everything else I know she needs?

I can be a little patient, I guess.

We have only just met after all.

The car pulls up right by the elevator, and my driver’s swift to open the door this time.

I can sense Brynn looking worried all over again at being found out, but I tell her not to worry.

Simon’s face is shocked when he sees Brynn step out of the car first, followed by me with my coat over my front to hide what I realize might be a permanent thing whenever she’s around.

“I had her in my pocket the whole time,” I tell him with a wink as we both pass by him.

He swallows hard, realizing that not only was he late, but someone was in the limo this morning. And all of last night.

I don’t hold it against him.

If anything, I should be thanking Simon for being late and inattentive. I’ll leave him to think it over.

No need to give him a dressing down after he’s done me a great service, bringing her safely to me.

If things had panned out differently today. If I hadn’t had a late breakfast and later than usual ride to work as well, I might never have met Brynn.

I might have decided to jog to the office or drive myself.

The thought makes me shiver as I casually ease her into the elevator. My hand on the small of her back.
