And now I have to decide what to do with her. She gave me everything I needed like a good little girl, but she knows who I am. I should get rid of her. But first I need one last thing.

Chapter 20

STORM

“She beat me up,” Kurt Gibbon shouts, banging his handcuffed hands on the interview table and making the recorder bounce. “The bitch beat me up. Why aren’t you going after her?”

“Tell us who she is,” says Storm patiently.

“I don’t know. Some bitch. She put tape on my eyes. On my eyes!”

Kurt Gibbon’s eyelashes are missing, as are half of his dark brows. Clearly ripped off when he had removed the tape. It gives his face a blind mole-like look.

“Is she someone you knew?” Storm asks.

“No!”

“You sure about that?” says Leo. “You’re sure she wasn’t some girl you’ve made angry in the past?”

“I didn’t see her,” Gibbon says through gritted teeth.

“But you heard her voice?” says Leo.

“I was freaking out! I didn't recognize her voice, okay?”

“Then it was or wasn’t someone you know

?”

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

“So you do admit you’ve given a woman reason to be mad at you?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“This whole thing sounds like an unlikely story to me,” says Storm. “Perhaps you did this to yourself.”

Kurt Gibbon thrusts his hands towards Storm. All ten of his fingers are in bandages. He has claimed they are crushed but has refused to allow a medic near them. “You think I did this to myself?” he screeches.

“Perhaps you’d rather have crushed fingers than a murder rap,” says Storm.

“Perhaps you think being beat up by an anonymous assailant is a handy way to divert our attention,” says Leo.

“Did I tape myself up too?” Gibbon yells, showing them his raw wrists that he claims he had to bite and break the tape off of. “Look at my face. You think I’m gonna do this to my face?”

“Perhaps you got your girlfriend to do that to you,” says Leo.

“Look at this!” Gibbon yells. He lifts up his chin and stretches out the loose skin there until two pairs of red dots become visible. “The bitch tazed me. She tazed me twice. I could have had a heart attack!”

Storm narrows his eyes. It really does look like stun gun burns. But perhaps he got his girlfriend to do that too. Remi is speaking to the woman right now. She has a rap sheet as long as her arm, mostly petty theft and solicitation. But it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine she could have cooked this up with Gibbon if he paid her a large enough sum.

“Why didn't you call the police?” Storm asks. “Why go on the run? It doesn't look good for you.”

“Because I was scared the bitch was coming back, okay. She’s gone mad. She’s capable of anything.”

“You must have made her really mad. What did you do?”

“Nothing. I didn't do nothing to no bitch!”
