A couple of days later, I was sprawled on my couch and holding my phone in my hand, my smile huge as I texted Merritt back. We hadn’t been able to see each other at all the last three days because of Merritt’s extremely busy schedule. Yesterday, he left on a business trip, and tonight he finally found some time for texting.
I feel like I’m dating the president of the United States- I texted him.
Why?- he texted back.
Because I can hardly see you. Soon, I’d have to schedule an appointment see you.

And I thought my dad was a busy man. Before he retired, anyway, now he just makes my mom crazy.
What did your father do? I don’t remember Carter ever telling me.
He owned a consulting firm, but he sold it before he retired.
I assume you had no interest in his business.
And that’s putting it mildly. My father hoped I would follow his footsteps, but I had a knack for politics, just like Carter, so he gave up on persuading me a long time ago.
What made you interested in politics in the first place?
My history teacher talking about the founding fathers.

So, it was only natural for me to start politics too. He taught me a lot about political systems and laws before I actually started studying them in school.
That’s so cool. I wish my dad is like that. He doesn’t particularly like politicians. He thinks they are all the same.
Ouch. Then I guess he wasn’t happy when you told him you wanted to become an aide?
“He wasn’t happy?! He threw a tantrum that day! He didn’t talk to me for days! I think he thought maybe I wanted to do it because Carter did, but I wanted it for myself, not for him. Anyway I almost gave up on college I wanted, when he came to me and said I had the right to do whatever I wanted with my life. He just advised me to always be honest and work for people, not myself.
Your father is a smart man.
Yes. Smart and good. Too good for this world, in my opinion. He always liked you. Not sure how’d he feel now that you’re with me though.
Well I guess he’ll find out soon enough.
