?“Thank you, Tina. Do you think it will create the effect Louie is after?”

?She grinned. “Most definitely.”

?The cab dropped us off at the precinct, and Tina and I found Louie standing around in the lobby.

?“Hey, look at you, sweetie,” he praised as I walked in and gave him a twirl to show off my ensemble. He then turned to Tina. “I owe you, Tina.”

?“Yes you do,” Tina responded. “You know how hard it is to get paperwork moving on a Sunday.”

?He shifted back to me. “Okay, let me get you up to snuff. They got photos of Kane all messed up and photos of a bat they found a few blocks away. It’s an aluminum bat with black diamonds on the side.”

?“Sounds like the one we had last night,” I agreed. “I couldn’t find it today.”

?“I think this Kane guy took it with him as protection. Now, you know what to say?”

?I nodded. “I follow your lead.”

?“Good girl,” he smirked. “Tina you got all the paperwork?”

?Tina held up the folder of papers with a triumphant smile.

?“Okay, it’s show time!” he barked.

?We went up the stairs and to the room where Mark was being questioned. Louie told me to hang back and stand where I couldn’t be seen from the inside when the door was opened.

?We stopped outside the door, and he made sure the volume was turned up on a little box next to it. Voices came through the tinny speaker.

?“Yes, it’s my bat,” Mark was saying with a sigh. “Where was it found?”

?DeStadler’s big voice took over. “A dumpster around the corner from the crime scene.”

?“I assume with my prints?” Mark said defensively.

?“Yours and the deceased. Plus, part of the victim’s brain matter. You got an explanation for that?”

?“For crying out loud, I didn’t kill anyone.”

?“Look, Watkins, what am I supposed to do? I keep finding items with your prints at places where people are dead.”

?“I honestly didn't know any of these people before Wednesday. Even Ms. Homes.”

?Louie pushed his way through the door, and now his voice came over the speaker. “Questioning my client without me, detective? You know that’s not a good idea, right?”

?“I’ve got your client’s fingerprints on a fancy pipe at a crime scene,” DeStadler said. “I’ve got his gun as the murder weapon at a second scene, and I’ve got his fingerprints on the murder weapon at a third scene. At some point, I have to assume your client is involved.”

?“Have you got the TOD?” Louie demanded.

?“Time of death was between 1:00 and 2:00 A.M.,” DeStadler confirmed.

?“I see,” Louie said. “Mark, have you told these gentlemen where you were at that time?”

?Mark began. “At my condo—”

?“Not another word!” Louie snapped.

?That was my cue. I moved to the door and stood ready for my entrance.

?Louie opened the door with all the finesse of a magician revealing his restored assistant.
