?“As long as I know you aren’t going to handcuff me or throw me in a holding cell,” Mark said, “I’ll be happy to.”

?“Don’t worry. I will make sure any charges against you will be dropped,” DeStadler declared.

?“So,” Mark said, and reached out for my hand. “Maybe we aren’t such bad detectives after all?”

?DeStadler smiled. “I don’t want to encourage you, but you two make a pretty good team. Although, I would say there is, probably, one detective between the pair of you.”

?“It was elementary, my dear DeStadler,” Mark said.

?I gave him a dirty look. “Amazing!”

?“But do me a favor,” DeStadler begged. “Don’t get blamed for any more murders, okay?”

?“That will be our pleasure,” I agreed.

?DeStadler gave a smile and strode out.

?“When can we leave?” Mark asked.

?“You’re on pain killers, and they want to keep you overnight for observation,” I expressed. “Once they release you, you’re coming home with me.”

?“Really?”

?“I have to nurse you back to health.” I ran my fingers through his hair again. “Besides, I did tell DeStadler we spent the night together, remember? You don’t want to make a liar out of me, do you?”

?I bent close and brushed my lips to Mark’s, and we fell into a passionate kiss, as the machine that counted his heart rate began to beep wildly.

?Two weeks later, on a bright May morning, Sheryl and I sat at her kitchen island and stared at each other over toast and coffee. We both wore pajamas and enjoyed a lazy Sunday. Her eyes gleamed and she wore a satisfied look.

?“Last night was amazing,” I said, unable to stop the smile on my own face.

?“I have to admit I am surprised.”

?“By what?”

?“It just keeps getting better!” She gave a contented sigh.

?I nodded. “I thought it was pretty damn great the

first time.”

?“After all that ‘foreplay’ when we solved the crime? Oh, yes, I was quite ready.”

?“I was sure we couldn’t improve, but…”

?She gave a smirk. “Who says I can’t teach an old dog new tricks?”

?“Who are you calling old?” I pulled her into my arms and she giggled as I kissed her neck.

?“Don’t start anything,” she laughed. “We don’t have time!”

?I let her go and she got on the other side of the island to be safe. “You know what we have to talk about.”

?She nodded. “I know. We’ve been avoiding it.”
