?“Jon,” I exclaimed as we drew near, and Jon looked over and his eyes grew wide.

?“Sheryl? Mark?” he said. “This is…a surprise.”

?“Why, Jon?” I asked. “Mark and I are participants.”

?“No, it’s just—” Jon said, obviously flustered. He pulled us to the side. “The police were asking about you.”

?“What about the police?” I insisted. Mark’s eyes flicked right and left to see if anyone was close enough to listen.

?“I heard about Randall,” Jon divulged in low tones, and began to sweat. “And they found poor Candy a few hours ago. And then the police asked me a lot of questions about you and…um…you too, Mark.”

?“What kind of questions, Jon?” I demanded.

?Jon began to squirm. “Look, I really have to focus on the conference right now. It’s Friday and the weekend attendees are arriving. I have a lot to do.”

?“Fine. However, I’m interested in what you said to the police.”

?“Sheryl, Jesus Christ, everyone knew how you felt about Candy, as well as Randall,” Jon said. “I don’t think there’s any more to tell.”

?“Perhaps not,” I badgered. “By the way, you were the one who booked Mark for the event, right?”

?“I booked all the speakers, which were approved by the committee.”

?“But you knew what room Mark was staying in?”

?“Of course. So what?”

?“Who else would know?”

?“Anyone could’ve checked the list.” Jon frowned. He glanced around one more time and added, “Look, I really have to go.”

?“Where did you keep this list?” I argued, not letting him go.

?“It’s behind the welcome booth,” Jon conceded. “Usually, I am there, or Candy…maybe Alice. Occasionally Charles.”

?“How about Allen Alexander?” Mark put in.

?I liked the way his mind worked!

?Jon glanced at him. “I suppose he could have seen it. Everyone knows he’s a member. It wouldn’t have been unusual to see him at the booth.”

?“Were there times the booth was unsupervised?” I demanded, getting Jon’s attention again.

?“I imagine so. It’s unavoidable.”

?“But a person would have to know what they were looking for?”

?“I have to go,” Jon insisted and started away.

?“See you later, Jon,” I said as he walked off.

?“Why did you want to know about that?” Mark asked.

?“You have your room key?”

?Mark pulled it out of his pocket.

?I continued to watch Jon as he moved through the crowd. “Notice how it doesn’t show your room number.”
