?“I’ll do that, Detective.” Mark ended the call and looked at Jon Kane. “Looks like we are roomies for the night. Have you eaten?”

?“Not really.”

?I came out of the bedroom as Mark offered the uneaten half of his sandwich to Jon.

?“Is this whole-grain bread?” Jon challenged.

?“It’s what we have,” Mark told him. “I’ll make some eggs.” Mark went into the kitchen to cook a quick meal.

?“Excuse me,” I said, grabbed the papers from Jon, and followed Mark into the hallway that was his kitchen.

?“He’s staying here?” I hissed in a low whisper.

?“DeStadler wants us all in the same place.” Mark peeked over to see Jon start to eat what had been his sandwich. “They’re searching Jon’s apartment.”

?“But I was hoping—I mean, I thought—” I said, and it was my turn to flush red. My voice went even softer. “What are the sleeping arrangements?”

?“I figured you in the bedroom, Jon in the small guest bedroom, and I’ll sleep on the couch with the baseball bat to make sure he doesn’t bolt during the night.”

?I gave a sigh of frustration. “I guess that’ll have to do.”

?“Anything on the report I can’t understand?” Mark said.

?I held up the pages. “I’ve read it from the first name, Albert-comma-Alice to the last name Yeolde-comma-John, but several names jumped out.”

?I pointed at one of the columns on the top of the second page. “First, this one—” My finger went to “Alexander, Allen.”

?“Allen had investments with Randall?”

?“Apparently, and it looks like Randall got about ten grand from him.”

?Mark gave a low whistle. “Talk about motive.”

?“But that’s not all, look at this.” My finger moved down the column to the name, “Blake, Norman.”

?“That’s the guy who runs the jewelry booth!”

?“Yes, who is left-handed and has—or had—a pipe with your fingerprints on it.”

?Mark frowned. “I don’t know, he seemed so…well…jolly.”

?“He’s a big man and might have a lot of muscle.”

?“I guess so, but Hypno gave Jon Kane the pipe. She works for John Stewart.”

?“Yes, but we did see her talking to Blake’s assistant, Cliff, earlier,” I pointed out. “Do you know what ‘Hypno’ stands for?”

?“Hypatia Norris.”

?“Well, neither Norris nor Stewart’s names are on the list. But do you know who else is?”

?“You have me at a loss.”

?I smiled. “Poole-comma-Candy.”

?Mark nodded. “Wow, he was ripping off a woman he was sleeping with? That’s pretty dumb! It would certainly motivate her to be part of the scheme—”

?“To get her money back, and maybe some extra—as severance,” I insinuated.
