If I’m going to check out, then, by God, I’m going to take them with me. I just need to time my attack. I need to find out where Callie is staying. If she’s at the damn trailer park, I’ll have to get there really early to give me time to kill both of them. I want to catch Reed when he least expects it. That way I can tie him up and force him to watch me kill Callie.

And I will kill her this time.

I walk out breathing in the fresh air. There’s not a lot I’m going to miss in this world, but there are a few pleasures that I wouldn’t mind indulging in before I say goodbye. Maybe with any luck I can find a willing—or unwilling—woman. I mean, if I’m going to die, I might as well have fun first. I stop for a minute, not moving. I feel like someone is watching me. I look around but I can’t see anyone. Something has the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end. I scan the area again. I need to make my move soon. Being hunted is turning me into a pussy. I walk slowly to my truck, searching for whatever it is that has me on edge. I really don’t see anything.

I sit in my truck, still feeling that tension. I can’t figure it out, but maybe it’s just because I know the end is soon coming. Instead of thinking about that, I decide to concentrate on the fact I’ll be able to make Reed truly miserable before I kill him. My gaze moves back to the bar. I’m going to need a place to stay tonight, and without money, that’s not going to be easy.

A plan starts to form as I wait for people to exit the bar. A couple of guys come out a few minutes later and I frown. A little after that, another guy comes out.

“Fuck, was it a gay bar?” I gripe.

I don’t really have any idea. The game was in the back, so I didn’t spend time in the actual bar. There’s something to be said for trying new things before you die, but I’m a man who knows what I like. There’s not a woman out there whose cries will be more fun than Callie’s, but a stand in before I get to her tomorrow is definitely what I need. Plus, a woman will be easier to subdue. I don’t want to fuck this up and die before I get the chance to torture Reed.

That sexy dancer at the strip joint with the dark hair might be fun. I could even pretend she was Callie. It’s a while before she gets off work, but I suppose I could kill time waiting. I might count up enough change in this damn truck for a beer. Just as I’m about to start up and head in the direction, two blondes, one with extremely big tits, come out and catch my attention.

“Well, well, well. Look what I got here—two for the price of one.”

My eyes track them as I start up my truck. They get into a small Mazda car, and I wait for them to pull out before I follow them. Hopefully, they live alone. Lady luck hasn’t been on my side tonight, but a man can hope.

CHAPTER 29

Reed

He’s still driving the same damn truck. That’s just further proof the local cops are jokes. Surely, they have to have some kind of BOLO or something out on the truck? I watch him as he looks around—almost as if he can sense me. My hands tighten on the steering wheel, my knuckles going white to see what he’s doing next.

I’m driving Dad’s old truck, so I’m going to have to be careful so that he doesn’t see me. I don’t want him to know I’m around until it’s much too late. I watch as two women come out of the bar. In a couple of minutes, they pull out, and I see Mitch finally move. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know what’s on his mind. I’m not giving him a chance to do it, though. Mitch’s ability to terrorize and hurt women ends tonight.

If I thought he wasn’t following the women, that would have been proven wrong as he takes every turn they do. I’m staying back behind Mitch, very careful to keep plenty of distance between us. Up ahead of me, he slows down. I watch the girls’ small car pull into a driveway. I pull over at the end of the street when I see Mitch do the same up ahead of me. One of the girls gets out. My body tenses as I wait to see Mitch’s next move. I’d rather do this where there’s not a chance another person can get hurt. I reach over and open the glove compartment to find my gun. I grab it and put it in the seat beside me. If this is how it’s going to go down, so be it. Just as I prepare to get out, I see Mitch turn back onto the road, as the other girl heads out of sight in front of him. I relax a fraction and follow them. As I drive by the house, I notice one of the girls is standing there talking to what appear to be her parents. She has no idea that living with them probably saved her life.
