I smile. “They’re still so much in love that sometimes I find it embarrassing, especially growing up. But, looking back, they set the standards high for us. They made us want to find that one special person. Dad used to say I’d know when I found the one, because I’d only be able to think about her and no one else. That I’d constantly be preoccupied with thoughts of her. That I’d want to be with her all the time.” I brush the hair from her shoulder and tip her chin up to me. “I’ve found all that with you.”
“Oh!” Tears follow her softly spoken word of surprise. “I’ve found that with you as well Michael. That’s why I’m not staying here when you leave.” She kisses my chest and settles back down.
“My parents,” I continue, “live in a large house outside of Lexington and it’s where we all grew up, but we also spent a huge amount of time at my grandparents’ ranch. Uncle Sebastian spends a lot of time running the place and occasionally, they’ll all get out there. Mom says there’s nothing like seeing her husband in denim, mounted on his horse with all his brothers. I used to cringe at the look she’d get in her eyes whenever she was focused on Dad. Brooke laughs and straddles my waist as she sits up. “I’m looking forward to meeting your family Michael. I’m just nervous.”
“Don’t be. I’m lucky really to have the family that I do…Alex will be around at some point so you’ll get to meet my cousin and joint CEO of McKenzies. We’ll see Charlotte at the office, but I’m going to visit her at her home as well. She won’t have her guard up then and I’ll be able to talk to her better.”
“You’re still worried about her?”
“Yeah. It’s at the back of my mind all the time. If I hadn’t been so distracted before heading here, then I might have seen there was something wrong. I missed it altogether, and considering she’s my sister, I feel bad.”
“I get that, but I’m sure she’ll understand.”
“I hope so.”
