“I could help, if you like.”

“How?” she asks.

I glance at her again. She’s staring at me with wide eyes, making me think for a second about how much wider they’ll get the first time I thrust inside of her. When she realizes her pretty little hole is clamping tightly around my dick, and she thinks she can’t take me… and then relaxes as she gets even wetter and her young hot slit flowers for me.

I bite down, warning myself to focus.

My woman deserves my attention on our first date.

“It’s just a suggestion, but I could help you keep a schedule. I could text you to make sure you were sticking to it. But like I said, you don’t have to.”

“Would there be…”

Fuck.

I really need to keep my eyes on the road. Her cheeks are flush in the most adorable way as her voice catches like she can’t bring herself to say it.

“Would there be what?” I growl.

“It doesn’t matter.”

My mind spins, instincts galloping. “You were going to ask me if there would be punishment if you missed a writing day, weren’t you?”

She laughs in disbelief, and I know I’ve hit it right on the money. I know I’ve hit the issue squarely on the head.

“There could be,” I growl, voice trembling. “Let’s say you accidentally miss a writing day, maybe I’d have to hunt you down and bend you over. And then I’d pull your panties down just enough to show your ass, and spank you, spank you for every single word you missed. The problem is, you’d be so wet when I was done, I’d have to grab your red ass and hammer into your soaked hole.”

“Oh my God,” she whispers. “I want that, Bennet. Just not right now.”

I get the same feeling I did after our kiss, when I offered to take her someplace private. Either there’s something she’s not telling me or she’s worried I only want her for sex.

If it’s the former, then I won’t pressure her. I’ll let her tell me in her own time.

If it’s the latter, there’s no way I can explain the sum of my desire for her without telling her how badly I want to put a baby in her belly, share a family with her… even if it can never happen, not without Rick’s blessing.

And realistically, would he ever give it?

“What’s your book about?” I ask, forcing the subject from my thoughts, keen to get on safer ground.

“I… I don’t want to say.”

“And why’s that?” I chuckle. “Don’t worry, I’m not much of a literary critic. You don’t have to be worried.”

“No, it’s just, well…”

Looking at her almost shatters me. She’s wringing her hands in her lap, causing her breasts to shift as they brush against her arms. There isn’t a lot of cleavage on display, but it’s just enough to get my mouth watering.

But hell, she could be wrapped in a blanket and the shape of her would still ignite a fire inside of me.

“You might read too much into it.” She throws her hands up. “See things that aren’t there.”

“Why don’t you try me?”

She pauses and then nods. “Basically, it’s about this college girl who’s had a crush on her best friend’s dad for years, ever since she can remember. And then when they finally get together, she finds out he’s only doing it as revenge on her father, for something that happened in the past. But the woman really falls for it, really thinks this man loves her, and she distances herself from her whole family for him.”

Despite her warning not to read too much into it, my thoughts spiral as I wonder if that’s what she thinks is going to happen here.

I’d never abandon her. I’d never trick her. I’d hurt any motherfucker foolish enough to do that.

“I can hear you thinking,” she says. “I told you, it’s nothing to do with us. It’s just an idea that came to me and I knew I had to run with it.”

“What about the crush part?” I ask.

“Oh, heck,” she mutters. “Well… yeah, that part’s true. I’ve had a crush on you for ages. Couldn’t you tell?”

I laugh darkly. “Like I said before, I never noticed you when you were a kid. So no, I couldn’t tell.”

“So I’ve just dropped myself in it, then,” she says.

I shrug. “I don’t think so. I don’t care about who you were when you were some kid. I care about the woman you are now. And for the record – and this isn’t me reading too much into it – I’d never trick you. Never.”

“That is so you reading too much into it,” she whispers. “But thank you, Bennet. Really. I knew it anyway. But it’s nice to hear.”

I nod as I take the turn away from the smooth country road onto the bumpier dirt track. Luckily my sedan has been upgraded with all the best hydraulics and wheel tread.
