“Then let’s go,” he says warmly.

He steps from the car, walking around to my side as I open my door. Offering me his hand, he gazes down at me, a cacophony of emotion swirling in his eyes. It takes me a second to realize he’s staring at my breasts, his cheek ticking, his jaw tight.

“Fuck, Rory. How are we going to get through dinner?”

I can’t stop my lips from spreading widely across my face, getting wider each second under the weight of his lust. I’ve never felt so wanted, so needed, so desired in my entire life.

He steps forward and wraps his arms around me when I rise from the passenger seat, sliding his hands down my sides and grabbing onto my ass as our lips clash together again.

I can still hardly believe I’m kissing Bennet freaking Bradshaw, but there’s no way to deny the tingles dancing across my lips, tickling and teasing my sex as I imagine the same tingles flickering through every part of me.

He groans and breaks it off, but keeps our lips close together, so I can feel the shape of his smirk. “I’m almost tempted to drag you into the cabin right now,” he growls. “But I promised myself I’d be a gentleman tonight.”

I giggle.

“What?” He chuckles. “Am I not doing a good job so far?”

I don’t want him to do a good job. I want him to lead me into the cabin and throw me on the bed and tear his manhood out of his pants, grinding it into me so hard he doesn’t even take off my panties… pushes them aside, just enough so he can glide inside of me.

Biting down, I manage a nod. “I think you’re doing just fine, Bennet.”

I can’t tell him about my unstoppable fantasies, because I know he wants me just as badly. He’d drag me into the cabin and kiss me but with more meaning this time, a kiss that’s meant to lead somewhere…

I know I should tell him the truth, but I don’t think I can.

I sit at the table, the heat wafting around me and permeating my whole body. It gives me that fuzzy contented feeling, similar to being wrapped in a blanket after a long day.

Bennet stands at the edge of the platform, at a grill, his back to me as he tends to our dinner. The scent of steak rises into the air, joining the aroma of nature. The hiss of the frying meat seems much louder out here in the middle of nowhere.

“Thanks for doing this,” I say, and then take a small sip of my soda. “I didn’t expect you to cook for me.”

He turns massive and tall in his iron suit, which should look ridiculous next to the grill but he makes it work. “It’s no problem, Rory. And anyway, it’s not like I’m preparing a Michelin star meal or anything.”

“Still. Thank you.”

Our eyes meet and I get the sense there’s more he wants to say. For one deranged second, I wonder if he’s going to blurt out that he feels the same way I do, that all the ridiculous desires surging in my mind and heart have taken root within him too.

Then a dark look flickers across his countenance, and he turns back to the grill.

“You were thinking about dad.”

It’s more word vomit, spewed before I have a chance to stop myself. I should be focused on the romance of the lights and the warmth expanding inside of me, not negative stuff like how dad would react if he knew this was happening.

“Bennet,” I say when he doesn’t respond.

He sighs and turns to me. “Yeah, I was. I’m trying not to, Rory. But it’s difficult.”

“I know. It’s hard for me too.”

“If I thought there was any chance of resisting you… But it’s been a year since we nearly kissed, and I’ve thought about you every single day. And now that we have kissed…” He shakes his head. “There’s no going back.”

“You’re right,” I whisper.

Even if I’m not sure this could possibly ever work.

Chapter Twelve

Bennet

Rory is so adorable when she laughs in that shy excitable way, throwing her head back, her mirth resounding through the forest and bouncing off the stars. The sky is clear, the stars so much brighter out here than in the city… but nowhere near as captivating as the stars in her eyes, enticing me with more passion each moment.

“I’m not joking,” I tell her. “You’re going to be a bestselling writer. You’re going to shock the world.”

Her laughter stops and she slowly lets her gaze settle on me. “And what are you basing that on?”

“I’m going to use my savings to buy every copy the second it goes to print.” I grin. “That’s a pretty foolproof plan if you ask me.”

“Oh, okay. That makes sense. That’s about the only way it would happen, though.”
