Closing my eyes, I listen to the splash of the water and the hiss of the grill, and the music playing on the radio from the kitchen. It’s a beautiful summer day, the sunlight glowing orange on the inside of my eyelids, my heart so full of love I could sing.

And to think this all started with a letter, a lover’s note hidden in a mailbox.

I often think about that letter, wondering what would’ve happened if my perfect wife hadn’t sent it.

But I can’t even imagine it. My life with Lorelei and Colleen and Anna and Katy and Tyler and Sebastian… it’s the only life I can envision, the exact right place for me, for us, to be. I’ll never stop being grateful.

Opening my eyes, I reach down for the burger buns. Soon it’ll be feasting time.

Lifting the plastic packaging, I spot a folded-up piece of paper.

I take it, unfold it.

Three words, the only three words I ever need to hear, causing my heart to beat with contentment and my smile to spread across my face.

I love you.

Turning, I find Rory standing in the doorway, Sebastian in her arms.

She’s become even curvier in the years since our marriage, her body taking a gorgeous shape as she’s gifted us with more and more children. Today she’s wearing a sweet summer dress, hugging her curves, her cheeks a little rosy from the sun, making her look like she’s blushing.

But she rarely blushes these days. She’s become so confident, so self-assured. It’s been a downright pleasure to witness.

Walking over, I hold up the note, grinning. “How long have you been waiting there?”

“I was standing at the window.” She giggles. “Let’s see… for about ten minutes. Does that make me crazy?”

“It makes you mine,” I snarl, leaning over to kiss her on the cheek.

I stroke Sebastian’s head softly, as Tyler leaps from the water behind me and yells delightedly, “Daddy, it’s burger time!”
