He looked up, nodding and squinting. “Is something wrong?”

He was sixty-nine years old, making him just a year older than Mrs. Glass. I knew that, along with a few dozen other miscellaneous details I’d scooped from my sources. “Nothing,” I said. “And you know, we probably shouldn’t be saying anything about this to you. It’s just… Well, we work with Mrs. Glass.”

I looked at Elizabeth. She returned my gaze with wide, confused eyes. “Yes?” she asked. “We do.”

“Caroline?” Enzo asked. A little twinkle entered his eye. “Caroline Glass?”

I nodded. “And the thing is I overheard something. She was talking about this handsome man who works in the gym.” I bit back, like I was reconsidering if I should continue. “Well, I caught her on a personal phone call. I picked up the phone and it somehow wired me in. So I heard how she was confessing to a friend that she had feelings for this man.”

Elizabeth was staring aggressively at me now. To Enzo, I hoped it looked like she was trying to warn me off telling him any more secrets that could get us in trouble with our boss.

His eyebrows pulled down. “Caroline doesn’t—” he laughed, shaking his head. “She’s married to a businessman. Big money. Big house. Big cars.”

“A businessman in jail,” I corrected.

“Pardon?”

I nodded. “Brandon Glass was put in jail two years ago.” I shrugged. “Anyway, I really don’t know why I’m telling you all this. Elizabeth is probably right. I should mind my own business.” I brushed it all off with a wave of my hand. “Forget I said anything.”

Elizabeth followed me when I turned and headed for the exit of the gym.

“What the hell was that?” she hissed. “And why did you make me go home and get workout clothes if we weren’t even going to exercise?”

I grinned. “That was the master at work. Sometimes it’s best to plant a seed instead of showing up with an axe. I also made you get workout clothes because I wanted to see your ass in that gear.” I gave her the chef’s kiss. “Totally worth it.”

She paused, giving me a level stare. “So you brought me here to watch you put your seed in that poor, little old bald man?”

I raised my eyebrows, grinning. “Did you just make a joke?”

Elizabeth’s cheeks flushed red. “No.”

I put my arm around her. “I’m so proud of how far you’ve come, Lizz.”

She shook her head but didn’t try to peel my arm away.

And all my damn brain could do was remind me that screwing this thing up with Mrs. Glass could mean never getting to put my arm around Lizz again.

Nope. No melodrama. I was not the melodramatic guy. All I needed to do was trust my instincts and see this thing through. Enzo would brew on what I told him and make his move. And if Enzo made his move, then everything else would fall into place.

TRAVIS

Enzo was a damn coward. It had been two days and the bald little bastard hadn’t done a thing. But sometimes it wasn’t enough to simply plant a seed. Sometimes you had to uproot the seed and forcefully shove it into fertile soil. That was why I made sure he was sent a counterfeit invitation to Mrs. Glass’ company party this weekend at her cabin outside the city.

I just wished it didn’t mean waiting two days. I was very aware of Noah, Adrian, and Jordan all breathing down my neck on this. They were all working on their own solutions to the Mrs. Glass problem, and I had very few doubts that one of them would figure it out before long. The problem was all the easiest solutions involved bringing down Mrs. Glass. And I wasn’t just worried about protecting the old woman for Elizabeth’s sake. I happened to be an old romantic, and I wanted to see her get her happy ending with Enzo.

“You look smug,” Adrian noted. He was sitting behind his desk with the usual dark clouds all over his face.

Noah was there, too, and his face was buried in his laptop at the back of Adrian’s office.

“I’d say things are coming along very nicely,” I said, shrugging. “Why shouldn’t I look smug?”

“Is he telling the truth?” Adrian asked Elizabeth.

She sat beside me and wore a lovely black dress that showed just the faintest hint of cleavage. I had a growing bank of personal experience to testify to how absolutely amazing her figure was in its full, naked glory. I also found that I loved seeing her serious, badass self in her element contrasted with the blushing, often submissive side of her between the sheets. She was a woman of many shades, and I was learning to love every last one of them. I just wished there wasn’t still a cloud of the unknown hanging over us. I could feel in my bones that the way this whole thing shaped out was going to decide if I got to keep Elizabeth or if she was going to have to choose between her dreams and us.
