“On the house. Thanks for your service.”

“Thanks again.” Liam nods and steps away while I try to snatch the plate out of his hand. He knows my end game and pulls it back before I make contact. “Easy there, killer.”

“Give it to me.”

“Or what?”

“Or I may just bite your hand off. You know it tastes the best when it’s fresh. The powdered sugar is still fluffy and melts in your mouth.”

His eyebrows hike up. “Are we still talking about funnel cake?”

Oh, that little. . .I slap his chest. “Yes. Now give me a bite.”

“Say please.”

“Liam,” I warn. He pretends to almost drop it, and I squeal. “Liam, seriously. Give me a bite. And if you drop it, I will most definitely just eat it off the ground. Nothing this delicious should go to waste.”

Liam throws his head back and laughs. “I admire your dedication, Holls.” He rips off a piece of cake. “Open up.”

My hands go to my hips as I eye him. “Seriously?”

“How much do you want the bite?” He starts to lift the piece to his mouth, and I swat at his arm.

“Okay! Fine.” I open my mouth, anticipating the moment the warm dough hits my lips. He takes his time lifting his fingers to my mouth. The damn smirk creeping along his face is going to get him a sock in the junk.

“Not gonna lie. I like you like this.” I’m suddenly frozen, my jaw suspended while his words sink in. His eyes light up, and he gently strokes the warm dough against my bottom lip. I hold my breath, unsure what I want more, the sugary bite or the taste of his sultry lips on mine. So much so, I wet my own lips and shiver at the thin brush of sugar, anticipating both. I lean in, ready to—

“Liam? Liam Cody, oh my god!” We both turn to the woman inching her way between us. “I knew it was you. Mary. Mary McCallister. We went to high school together.”

Liam drops his arm, along with my bite, and forces a smile. “Hey, yeah. How’s it going?”

“Just enjoying the night. Wow, you look great.” She raises her dainty hand and brushes it up and down his arm. “My goodness. So strong.” My lips purse at the way she squeezes his bicep.

“Thanks. Do you remember—”

“Oh, no, thank you. Heard you were away serving our country. Thank you for your service.” She sways her hips, showing off boobs she certainly didn’t have in high school. Liam doesn’t seem bothered by her hands on him, and it irritates me. She moves in closer, sniffing the funnel cake—my funnel cake. “Oh my lord above, that smells heavenly. Think you can spare a bite?” Then she opens her mouth.

My jaw drops in absolute shock. Is this chick for real? Even worse, Liam just stands there! If he even dares. . .

His eyes drop to the funnel cake then back to her.

Is he—is he considering it? My hands form into tight fists. Clenching my jaw, I clear my throat loudly, which may come out more like a growl.

Finally, she turns to me. “Oh, hello.”

“Oh, yeah, hey.”

“You look familiar. Do we know each other?”

That’s it. I’m ripping out her weave. I take a step toward her—

“Mary, this is Holly.”

Mary looks as if she’s struggling with her last brain cell to figure out who I am. “Oh, Hillary, right? I think I remember you. Wait…weren’t you two, like, an item for a little bit in high school?”

I sneer at her comment. “Weren’t you, like, voted Willow Falls’ biggest slu—”

“Okay! Holly and I were going to check out the gingerbread house station. Hear it’s a real doozy this year. Nice seein’ you.” Her red lips part, wanting to say more, but Liam rips his arm from her grip, reaches for my hand, and walks us away.

“Can you believe that chick? Hillary. Like she didn’t remember my name when you just said it. And an item for a little bit. Seriously? We were inseparable. Practically attached at the hip. We didn’t even look at anyone else the whole time we dated!” Liam just stares at me. “Are you going to say something?”

“Are you jealous, Holls?”

I scoff. “Oh, please. Why would I be jealous? We’re just frien—”

Liam cuts me off and drags me away from the crowd and into the alley, pressing my back up against the brick wall. “And how’s being just friends workin’ out for you?”

His mouth crashes against mine, passion igniting between us. His tongue parts my lips, my composure evaporates, and I forget we’re in a place where anyone could catch us. I kiss him back, my own desire revving up. I wrap my arms around him, needing more. The funnel cake hits the ground as he seizes my hips and presses me up against the brick building. The sound of his deep moan, the sweetest melody, excites me, and I spin out of control. Everything about him is fueling my need, and I can’t even remember what had me so worked up in the first place. The only thing on my mind is his lips on mine and how I never want them to be elsewhere. Well, maybe a few other places.
