I’ve thought about it for days. I questioned the timing, wondering if it was better to wait until the stuff with her dad blew over. But I want to give her a reason to smile. A reason to show her that she’s made the right choice and that we’re going to be happy together. And with a baby on the way in less than nine months, I want us to be able to wed first. I want our wedding to be special, even if it means rushing to make it happen, and there’s no time to lose. It’s time to make a big move.

Today’s the day. I tell Elle I’m heading out for groceries, but instead, I head to the jewelers in town. I’ve often walked past this particular store and seen beautiful rings in the window, so I know I’ll find something perfect for Elle in there. I can barely believe I’m finally doing this. After all these years alone, I’m going to find the perfect ring for my perfect woman. I never thought this day would come. Now that it’s here, I feel love filling my heart and nerves bubble in my stomach. I want to get this right.

But it turns out that I don’t need to worry because I see the ring I want the second I step into the store. The diamonds seem to wink at me knowingly, and I step toward the counter, mesmerized. It’s made entirely of diamonds, but the design is simple, a perfect ring for my woman. I know she wouldn’t want anything with too much fuss, so it seems like it would suit her perfectly. I call over the clerk and ask about sizing and boxing options. Within an hour, I’m out of there, ready to make my dream a reality.

When I get home and see Elle sitting on the couch with Maisie, writing on her laptop, I can’t stop from smiling. She has no idea that I’m going to propose tonight. It’s so incredible to watch her, knowing that our lives are about to change forever. We’re going to be with one another for the rest of our lives, and that makes me happier than I’ll ever be able to express. She looks up at me as I enter the room and smiles.

“Hey. Did you get everything you wanted at the store?” she asks.

“I did,” I say with a grin.

She has no clue and it sends a jolt of excitement through me. I can’t wait to ask her the biggest question of my life. I can’t wait to make this official. She’s everything to me, and now I get to prove it.

I spend the day making preparations for the evening. I know that Elle hasn’t felt like going out lately so I decided instead to make a homemade dinner for her. I know she’ll appreciate it just as much. She finds happiness in the smallest things in life, in the small efforts I put in for her. This is the perfect way to prove my love to her.

I don’t tell her that I’m cooking dinner tonight. She’s cooked for us a few times, but I haven’t cooked for her yet. She comes into the kitchen while I’m making pasta sauce from scratch and I watch her jaw drop.

“You didn’t tell me you could cook. It smells incredible in here,” she says excitedly.

I smile, chopping basil for the garnish. “There’s a lot of things I can do,” I say. “I thought I’d cook you something special tonight. How does pasta arrabiata sound?”

She blushes. “It’s my favorite,”

“Exactly,” I say with a smile.

She blinks in shock. I guess she didn’t expect that I’d pay so much attention to the details of our conversations, but I remember everything she’s told me about herself. I’ll never miss a detail where she’s concerned. And that’s why I picked her favorite dish for tonight. I knew she’d appreciate it, after all. At least I’ve put a smile on her face. That’s exactly my aim for tonight.

We sit at the table to eat when I finish cooking. I’ve laid out the table nicely and lit some scented candles. Lavender, her favorite again. She looks a little baffled as she makes her way through her pasta, taking it all in.

“This is so lovely,” she says. “You did all of this for me? I…I never thought anyone would be so thoughtful where I’m concerned.”

“Get used to it,” I tell her. “You deserve to be treated like the queen that you are. I never want you to question your worth, Elle. I never want you to feel like you don’t deserve everything I do for you and more. Maybe other men have made you feel that way in your life but I’ll never be that man. I’m going to spend the rest of our lives together making sure you have everything you could possibly want.”
