He kissed her then, a long, sweet, deep kiss that touched her heart, reached into her soul. Together, they lay back on the blanket as the sky darkened and the stars began to shine.

She drew his hand to her breast. “Make love to me, Cal.”

“Here?” he murmured against her throat.

“Right here. With just the moon and the stars above us.”

He took her lips again, undoing her buttons and trailing his fingers over her sensitive skin until she moaned. She lifted when he pulled her jeans down and cried out softly as he found the heat between her legs.

And when he filled her, he filled her whole heart, her whole soul.

She wrapped her arms around him and pulled him deeper. “I love you with everything in me.”

“God, I love you.” She was his everything. Without Lyssa, he was only half a human being. And it was a miracle that she loved him back.

He steeped himself in her scent, her taste, the feel of her around him.

“I love you. I love you.” His voice echoed in the night, and she filled him up with her cries of pleasure, with her words of love.

He vowed that nothing would come between them now.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Saturday arrived, and Lyssa and Cal drove down to Susan and Bob’s newly renovated house in Portola Valley. Since they both lived in San Francisco and worked at the foundation, no one questioned their walking in together.

The Mavericks had done an amazing job with the remodel. They’d installed hardwood floors, painted the walls, remodeled the kitchen from top to bottom with new appliances, and redone every bathroom. There were three new decks, one outside the kitchen door, stepping down to another deck with the barbecue, then up to a third deck outside the dining room. The backyard was full of newly planted flowers and bushes. The pool had an in-ground hot tub at the far end, and the sauna was just inside their parents’ bathroom, with a door that led out to the pool and hot tub.

Everyone was in the backyard admiring the new landscaping.

“Are you ready for this?” Cal asked as they set out their Gouda cheese and artisan bread offering on one of her mother’s platters.

It had been two days since their trip, and though they’d agreed the party would be the best time to tell the family, Lyssa couldn’t ignore the quivers in her belly.

Still, she put on a brave smile, knowing that she and Cal would have each other’s backs, no matter how anyone reacted. “I’m sure some of my brothers will have a momentary freak-out when we tell them about us…and the baby. But they’ll all be okay with it in the end.”

Cal didn’t look so sure. “Your parents, maybe. But the Mavericks?” He shook his head. “They’re not going to like our being together—or my getting you pregnant—not one bit.”

She lifted her hand to his cheek. “Don’t worry, I’ll talk them around. I’m good at that, remember?”

He smiled into her eyes. “You sure are. You have a particular knack for sweet-talking billionaires.”

He leaned in, giving her a soft, deliciously sweet kiss.

Then they squared their shoulders and prepared to break the big news to her family.

Daniel finished a quick check of the household, making sure everything was in place, no tools left behind, every finishing nail concealed with putty, all excess tile grout wiped away.

He was about to enter the kitchen when he saw that Cal and Lyssa had arrived, their soft voices clearly audible in the empty house.

A word caught his attention, and though he shouldn’t have, he listened.

“I’m sure some of my brothers will have a momentary freak-out when we tell them about us…and the baby.”

His heart stopped beating entirely. Lyssa couldn’t be saying what he thought she was saying. Could she?

What else could sound like the word baby?

Maybe it was something to do with the foundation. Yeah, they had to be talking about a huge donor. Or maybe one of Gideon’s facilities. Or a social club for veterans.

But then Cal said, “They’re not going to like our being together—or my getting you pregnant—not one bit.”

The blood started to roar in Daniel’s ears, rising to a crescendo when he saw Cal lean in close and kiss his baby sister.

That was when he knew for sure: Cal had seduced his sister and gotten her pregnant.

And Daniel was going to kill him.

Everyone was standing by the pool. Francine, Charlie’s mom, had turned her walker around and was sitting on it, a beatific smile on her face. She loved being with family even if she lived in an extremely nice care facility.

“Can me and Jorge go swimming?” Noah asked his dad.

“We haven’t heated the pool yet, guys. It’s freezing in there. And it’s not all that hot out today, even if the sun is shining.”
