Alex extended his hand and Muffy set her much smaller palm in his. Even that motion still made his stomach cramp up. He’d call them butterflies, but he was a dude and that sounded funny. “Deal.”

They shook on it and then he bent to seal it with a scorching kiss.

“We’re going to be late,” Muffy panted. “Find me a pair of shoes that actually still fit.”

“Flip flops?”

“I guess so,” she grumbled, but it wasn’t genuine.

Alex winked. He grabbed Muffy’s sandals out of the closet, set his hand at the small of her back, and guided her out of their bedroom.

He’d make a thousand bets with her. A hundred thousand. A million. Whatever it took. He’d do anything for her and the best part? After so many years of dating women who just wanted to use him as a bank account, it made finding something genuine that much better. Muffy would move heaven and earth for him. She’d given him the entire world and a family. Their best friends were getting married, against all odds. He was pretty sure that life couldn’t get any better.

He had it all. All because of that crazy bet so many years ago.

The best bet he’d ever made. It was probably the worst decision, and if he could do it all over again, he’d change it, do it right, just to erase that week of pain they both endured, but strangely enough, it worked out. So yeah, it probably was the best bet.

Ever.

The End
