I logged in my things and locked them up. Then I went into the bathroom to change into the dress I’d taken with me when I left. It covered me from neck to feet, but it wasn’t for cold weather. I was forced to wear my coat, which wasn’t approved, as it hadn’t been made by hand. But I didn’t have another with me and needed it for the walk home.

The crunch of the snow underfoot in the silence only heightened my nerves. I wasn’t sure how I’d be received, especially by my father.

I walked the rest of the way to my parents’ door and stopped short when I spotted a man working on our front window. His frame was too familiar.

He’d heard my approach and turned. It was as if time had stood frozen. He hadn’t changed a bit. He was every bit as handsome as the last time I’d seen him. “Turner.”

“Bailey,” he said.

And my heart stopped as the sole ring I wore burned on my finger.
