“It’s okay,” I assured her when she hesitated to reach for it.

Taking a deep breath, she extended her hand, wrapping her palm around the weapon.

And nothing happened.

Like I knew it wouldn’t.

But she wasn’t quite satisfied with that.

Her hand shot out again, this time toward Gideon’s throat, closing around the cross he wore there.

“See?” I asked when she didn’t burn. “It all worked out,” I told her, giving Gideon a nod before he turned to walk away with everyone else.

“It all worked out,” she repeated, sounding a little in awe. “I didn’t have to choose.”

“Never. I’d never ask that of you.”

“I would have chosen you,” she declared, turning in my arms so her chest was flush with me. “In a million different variables, I would have always chosen you.”

Fuck.

All those long months of misery, of being so far down in a hole that there seemed to be no way out of it, they were all worth it.

Worth this.

With her.

Forever.
