“What about Rocco and Smitt and the fact that Ivan’s men p

icked them up?”

“It means someone on the inside ratted them out. They know not to talk. They don’t know we’re behind the orders to do these takeovers and hits either. That’s what’s so perfect about this. If it were to fail we wait a little longer and try a different angle.”

“Rocco and Smitt only care about getting paid. The way I set this up all fingers will point right back to the family or an outside source. Either way it won’t matter because it will take time to figure things out and we can strike again.”

“Are you crazy? You want to go through with the deal with Lanka?” Aiden asked.

“Of course. When all is said and done, and Ivan is dead along with his entourage of shit, they’ll be multiple positions of power up for grabs. I intend on being in one of those positions. Now let’s get things going with Lanka so the next job can happen quickly.”

“What about not knowing the details about last night and who was involved? We aren’t getting any information through the families, just that someone went after Ivan and his guards outside of the club, that an innocent was hurt in the process. That could mean anyone.”

“We’ll get more information Aiden, but I doubt it will matter. It was probably someone walking down the street or a patron of the club. A nobody. It won’t matter. Make the arrangements for the meeting with Lanka, then we’ll see what the next step is.”

Chapter Eight

“How do you know that she wasn’t part of this, Ivan?” Alex Marcollies asked over the phone.

“She wasn’t part of it Alex. She saved my men’s lives, mine too by striking Berin so he couldn’t make the shot.”

“So you’ve looked into her thoroughly?”

“Partially before she was hired as a manager. Dante can do more, Griska knows a family friend of hers. A professor she had while in college that was friends with her aunt. She is young, naïve and unaware of the lives we live. She is trained in self-defense through being on her own a lot. It helped buy her time.”

“And what about her fooling around with Maloney?”

Ivan felt the anger and jealously hit his gut. He wasn’t over that. The thought of her with any other man angered him more and more, yet he wasn’t making a claim to her or initiating anything more. He stole kisses, unable to resist her beauty and her scent.

“It was not as it seemed. Maloney forced that upon her and she pushed him away. I’ve dealt with that accordingly.”

“I was there at Gable’s I know how you think you handled it Ivan, however since I’m assuming you aren’t making it known that she is your woman then that means she is fair game. No commitment on your end has her potentially looking flexible and open to anyone who is interested.”

“Not going to happen.”

“Knowing the consequences and perhaps doing a little more digging into her will help you be persuaded one way or the other. Now, what can we do to assist in this investigation? It’s obvious we have some rats in the family.”

“Just as it is obvious who to put at the top of a list I’m comprising.”

“So no need for me to worry or for my assistance at this time?”

“Not at this time Alex, but I appreciate the quick back up. I’ll keep you posted on the process.”

“Good. So give that beauty a kiss for me. Make sure you don’t expose her to anything unnecessary. Word will travel fast that she helped to save your life and your men. Interest will be gained whether she’s ready for that or not. That goes for you as well.”

Ivan ended the call and then glanced at his watch. It was nearly three in the afternoon. He left Annabella with Dante and Roman to watch over her. She was insisting on going home. How could he let her when an uneasy feeling was haunting his body? He stood up and walked toward the door. He opened it and could hear Roman and Dante talking to Annabella.

“So you took those classes in Texas too and with Special Forces guys?” Roman asked her.

“It was the best class really, although they held back and didn’t want to show me too many things. I think they were pretending that they were secret moves that only military men could know.”

Roman chuckled.

“You did that move with ease and quickness the first night we all saw you at Gables during the interview. We were all impressed, especially as you did that in heels.” Dante told her.

“I was lucky I hadn’t fallen on my ass. I just saw the knife and reacted.”

“Like last night with Berin. That was a slick move.” Roman said.
