As her friends enjoyed conversation with the guys Annabella prepared to leave for work, her thoughts on Gables and on Ivan. The man confused her. She needed to use the lady’s room before she left so she excused herself a moment and began walking through the small crowd of people. Denver was a few feet behind her as she passed the bar and three good-looking men looked her over and smiled. One stepped forward.

“Miss Asiago?” he asked.

She squinted and nodded. “And you are?” She asked and he gazed over her body.

She looked very good tonight, wore a burgundy slim fitting dress that accentuated her curves a

nd showed more cleavage than she normally would. However several decorative chains accentuated the deep cleavage of her breasts. She wore her hair down, cascading over her shoulders and down her back.

“My name is Myran Shaw. I’m a business associate of Ivan Sokolov’s.” He said to her and licked his lower lip. She got an uneasy feeling and one glance at Denver and the man was on guard. Myran watched her and then looked at Denver.

“One of Sokolov’s guards I see.”

“Not by choice.” She said and then wished she hadn’t.

“Can I buy you a drink?” He asked.

“Oh, no thank you. I’m actually heading to work shortly and need to use the lady’s room.”

He reached around and pulled her closer. “I insist, for saving Ivan’s life and his guards as well. Quite intriguing.” He said and eyed her breasts, squeezing her hip. She immediately thought about Louisa’s warning. How enemies of Ivan could see her as a target, a vulnerability to get at Ivan, and more than likely he didn’t want her getting hurt so he assigned Denver to her. So maybe her response about not needing a guard and even being annoyed with it, would help her out here.

“Oakley, another round and for Miss Asiago?” he said to her.

“Raspberry vodka and 7-UP please.” She said and Myran nodded.

“Interesting choice.”

“Very popular at Gables. Flavored everything, really.” She said to him and he smiled.

He was an older man, maybe fifty, with black hair, grey here and there but it gave him a distinguished appearance. He didn’t introduce the other men he was with but she looked them over, memorized their faces just in case. She got a funny feeling in her gut. This new way of thinking just popped into her head. Like who was she? Was she some sort of investigator? Mistress to a mob boss? A spy against Ivan and his friends? Holy crap I need that drink.

Myran made a toast. “To meeting such a lovely, and capable woman as Annabella. I hope I can talk you into meeting sometime.”

“Why would I do that?” She asked and clinked her glass with his. She took a sip.

“You don’t know who I am, which makes you even more precious. No wonder Ivan is acting so protective.”

“What does that mean?” She asked.

“He placed a guard on you.” He looked her body over.

“And your point is what, Mr. Shaw.”

“Myran, please, and it is a strategic move to show protection over you.”

“Precaution and temporary.”

“He’s a very powerful man, and can get any woman he wants whenever he wants to. I think his last lay was Cassandra Holmes. Lovely and talented mouth on her, and she’s pretty good at legal affairs and business. She knows to keep her mouth shut and to not interfere in things that have nothing to do with her. Some people aren’t so smart.” He told her and she had to gulp at the sting of jealousy.

What was this man’s reason for telling her this? A warning of some sort? A game. She chuckled, and he squinted. She took another sip from her drink and wished it was stronger. She placed it down onto the bar.

“You laugh and show no jealousy or uncertainty?”

“Jealousy? Why? Uncertainty? To what? To whom? I’m a manager at a club owned by Griska Mulcheck. That’s who I answer to. I’ve learned there are some people around town that get the utmost respect and that no matter how absurd, I need to comply, and I know others aren’t as important and don’t deserve or rather require the same level of respect. Now as much as I would love to stay here and try to figure out which category you fit in, I have a job to get to and bills to pay, I also mind my own business and do what I need to do.” She went to move and he pulled her closer.

“God damn, no wonder you have a guard and you’re the talk of the town. You screwing him too? Like Cassandra and the others?”

“Let go of me.”
