We hung up. The laughter of watching I Love Lucy had died with the phone call from Adin. Speaking to Littie this afternoon and Adin tonight reminded me that I had some serious thinking to do. The time had come to get my life in order. The time had come to get James, the hell out of my life. Decisions, decisions. What to do? What to do?

The next morning I awoke in my king sized bed alone. The blankets were strewn across the foot of the bed where I had kicked them. Every day, at least one member of my family called and today was no exception. Gemma rang me at seven in the morning. I had overslept because James had not come home at all no one had turned on the alarm clock. I was a big girl and should have turned on the alarm clock myself but dammit I hadn’t. I was waiting for him to do it when he came home.

He probably had stayed at his office in Lexington all night without bothering to call me. Later, I would check on him to find out if he was dead or alive.

“Hello,” I sleepily said into the telephone.

“Gab, it’s me,” Gemma whispered. “Why aren’t you out of bed?” She asked. “Doesn’t Kat have school? Have I bothered James?”

“Yes, Keegan has school today. I overslept. Thank God you called. James isn’t even here,” I whispered. “Gem, why are we whispering?” I asked confused and sleepy.

“I don’t know,” she replied louder this time in a normal voice.

“What’s wrong?” I asked glancing at the clock.

“Nothing.”

“I know better. You don’t call me at this time of the morning unless you want something or something is wrong. Only Yancy calls at seven a.m.”

“Gab, Troy and I were married in Las Vegas this past weekend. I couldn’t tolerate Yancy’s interference any longer with the wedding plans.”

Bolting upright in bed I screamed happily, “That’s great.”

“I hope you think so in a minute,” she replied uneasily.

“Oh fuck me. You want me to tell Yancy,” I said with dread falling back against the pillows slapping my forehead with the palm of my hand.

Why did my sisters always leave me to do their dirty work for them where Yancy was concerned?

“Why me?” I asked.

“Because she likes you better than any of us and you know how to handle her, the best.”

“That is absolute fucking bullshit,” I told my sister angrily sitting up again, cross legged on the bed. “You are a coward.”

“Watch your mouth. Please Gab.”

Her sister sounded truly terrified.

“She won’t hurt you. At least not much.”

“You’ll do it then?” She asked me.

“Of course, I enjoy being tortured by Yancy.”

“Call me after you tell her?”

I hung up the phone without saying goodbye. Slamming the receiver harder than necessary. I bolted out of bed, throwing the remaining blankets and sheets wherever they landed.

In Kat’s room I shook her shoulder vigorously to awaken my dead to the world daughter.

“Keegan, we overslept. Get up.”

“I will Mommy,” she mumbled turning away from me baring a long, lean leg in the process as the blankets rolled with her.

“Keegan, your Aunt Gem got married in Las Vegas this weekend and I have to call Yancy and tell her. Time to get up…now.”
