THERE IS NO US

KARINA

We didn’t do anything.

After picking me up and pushing me up against the wall, we did nothing. And it was as if it didn’t faze Nathan at all. He went along on his merry way, carrying out his days like he probably would have before I arrived. Meanwhile, I had to look at his stupid fucking face and be reminded of the stubbles of hair on his chin that tickled at my neck and the way his teeth sunk into my skin, like a starved animal. I should have slapped him that night, but I caved into the feeling of his fingertips burning against my skin.

It was torture. I didn’t want to relive a night that happened almost a month ago and yet my friend still probed me for answers.

“How big was he?” Bunny smirked, raising her eyebrows. She held her hands out and moved them farther apart, hoping I would tell her when to stop.

“How should I know? I didn’t see it.”

She dropped her hands in defeat and sighed. “That doesn’t mean you couldn’t have felt it... or was he that small?”

Oh, he was, without a doubt, big enough for me to feel something pressing up against me. I bit my bottom lip, shaking the memory from my head. “He wasn’t that small.”

“So then he’s small?” She raised an eyebrow curiously. I couldn’t understand her fascination with sizes and knowing how big they were.

“No, Bunny.” I shook my head. “Can we not talk about this?”

“Are you going to let him pop your cherry?” A grin formed on her lips.

I gave her a warning look. My sex life was not a topic I wanted to talk about, especially not in the house. People were always listening in.

“What? It’s not like I know if you are or aren’t.”

She did, though. Although many people thought I wasn’t a virgin, I never actually had sex before. Sure, I had done other things like touching and sucking them off, but there was never any penetration. Since no one ever tried to understand me, I never let them get far. Maybe that’s why it was so easy for me to get lost under Nathan’s touch.

“Earth to Karina.” Bunny snapped her fingers in front of my face.

“What?”

“I said, does he know about your past relationships?”

“What do you mean, relationships?” I asked. She and I both knew I never had one.

“I’m sorry. I mean, the guys you flirted or went out on dates with.”

“No, but it doesn’t matter. They were back in high school. Besides, nothing else is going to happen. Nathan made it clear what happened that night was nothing to him.” And it wasn’t like I planned on dating the guy. He was my father’s bodyguard, after all. Work and relationships didn’t mix, not even with handsome bodyguards with a playful smirk and a touch that engraved itself in my memory.

“Or he’s been avoiding you because it did,” she said, bringing to light a conclusion I never even thought about. “I saw the way he looked at you when he was with us. He’s attracted to you.”

“Of course he is. Why else would he have kissed me back, because I wanted to?”

Bunny shrugged. Oh no, he only did it because I wanted to. I groaned, sliding my hand down my face.

“Miss Karina?”

A voice I dreaded hearing called out from behind the door. I pushed myself up from the bed and walked over. Opening it, I stared at the dark-haired male with blue eyes dressed in his usual black suit and tie. “Yes, Adam?”

“I apologize for interrupting but may I have a word with you,” his eyes darted to Bunny, then back at me. “Alone.” His unfriendly tone reminded me of what Nathan had said once:

I’m not qualified to be in the same vicinity as people with your status.

Did Adam think the same about Bunny?

“I was about to head home, anyway.” Bunny got up from the bed and walked over to me.

I gave her a look, hoping she could read the plea screaming not to leave me alone, but she hugged me instead.

“Text me,” she said as she pulled away and walked out the door.

Once her footsteps disappeared, Adam gave me a soft smile. “I was hoping we could speak in private.”

“About what?” I asked, blocking the entrance to my room. He may have been an old family friend, but ever since one of the previous bodyguards almost assaulted me, I trusted none of my father’s employees or business partners to enter my room.

“It’s about, James.”

“Oh, what about him?” Crossing my arms over my chest, I leaned against the post.

“I’d like it if you went to your father and spoke to him about the matter.” He adjusted the cufflinks at his wrist, keeping his eyes on me. “James is capable of giving you the care and protection you need.”

“Why?” I asked, my blood spiking in anger. “Because he’s not rich?”

Adam chuckled, “I take it James had a few words with you?”

“Mr. James has spoken to me about plenty.” I dropped my hands to my sides and stood up straight. “Nothing that concerns you. He’s doing his job, protecting me from harm. I have been fine in his care.”

Adam shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair. “Miss Karina, I don’t think you understand the situation.”

“Would you care to explain?”

“I have always kept a close eye on you.” He stood up straight and cleared his throat. “You have been a dear friend and I believe it’s time we finally rule as we should over the elites.”

Rule together? I nearly laughed. I searched his face in disbelief. My eyebrows drew together. He couldn’t have been serious, but his demeanor said otherwise. “As wonderful as that sounds for you, I’m not interested.”

His fingers wrapped around my arm, pushing me back inside the room. He stepped inside, closing the door behind us. “I’m done playing nice with you, Miss Karina.”

I held a breath, gulping down my fear.

“Please, get out.” My voice came out in barely a whisper as I stepped back, trying to pull myself from his grip, but he continued talking as if he didn’t hear me.

“All these years, I spent playing your little games.”

“Games?” I tried once more to pull my arm from his grasp. “I never once played any games with you.”

“You know how I feel about us.” He said, towering over me, his grip loosening slightly.

I set myself free, stepping back and wrapping my arms around myself. “There is no us, Adam.”

“Yes, there is.”

Confusion must have been written all over my face because he grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at him. His words were calm and collected, but there was a serious twinkle in his eyes. “We belong together, Karina. I knew it from the moment I laid eyes on you.”

I thought back to the moment we met, back when we were teens. He used to come every evening to train as a bodyguard. When we were introduced, he swore he’d protect me one day. I once thought it was cute, but as we got older, we drifted apart as he focused more on my father and getting close to him.

“Adam, I’m sorry.” I shook my head. “I… I don’t want to be with you.”

Something flickered in his eye, and a smile crept on his lips. Without warning, rough lips crashed against mine. Possessive, as if what he said was true; I belonged to him.

But I didn’t, and I sure as hell would never be after his display of affection.

I placed my hands against his chest and shoved him away from me. Breaking the kiss, I raised my hand and instantly made contact with his face. A loud smack echoed in the room.

“Get out,” I spat with disgust.

His hand pressed to his cheek. A smile formed on his lips. “I always get what I want, Miss Karina. No matter how long it takes.”

Adam stood there for a moment, straightening up his suit before he took a step back. “I suggest you talk with your father.” He turned, reaching for the door handle. “Oh, and one last thing, make sure Mr. James keeps his hands off of you. I don’t share what is or what will be mine.”

With that, he opened the door and left. Wiping away his kiss, my eyes drifted to the figure standing still as Adam walked off. I caught Nathan standing a foot from the door. His eyes shifted from Adam to me.

“Did I miss something here?” Nathan asked.

My body shook as I held back a scream and slammed the door right in his stupid face.

Some fucking bodyguard.
