DID YOU CALL HIM DADDY?

KARINA

Show him exactly what a Vasiliev is capable of.

Matthew’s words stirred in my head for the past two weeks. Even as I sat at Blue Moon Diner again. The soft music, playing from the jukebox by the bathrooms, did nothing to push those words to back of my mind. But luckily, the moment Bunny hopped into the blue leather booth beside me, I was brought back to the present.

Across from us was my brother, Balthazar. After our father passed, we made it a habit to meet every two weeks. Although, like most teens his age, he didn’t care about spending time with his family and was too busy focused on two things: his friends and crushes. He typed away at his phone, dimples popping out as he smiled. The mischievous glint in his eyes told me he was ready for some trouble.

Next to him was Bunny’s brother, Miguel. A small brown curl fell from its place, bouncing against his forehead, but he didn’t care. No, he stared out the window, lost in a daydream.

“Are we done here?” Balthazar finally questioned.

I glanced over, seeing that he had placed his phone down on the table beside his empty plate. “Why, do you have somewhere else to be?” I asked.

“I do. Miguel and I have to get ready for a school party.”

“Miguel and you.” I raised an eyebrow between my little brother and the brunette, still fascinated by his own dreams. “I thought you two weren’t friends in the public eye?”

“We weren’t until Miguel made a fool of himself.” He nudged his shoulder with a smirk.

Miguel blinked twice, looking back at Balthazar. “What?”

“Remember, you got that black eye from—” Miguel shoved his hands in Balthazar’s face to keep him shut.

“From where?” Bunny questioned beside me.

“I told you already. I fell and hit my face.”

“Yeah, in front of everyone.” Balthazar was quick to follow up with Miguel’s lie, but I knew Bunny wouldn’t buy it.

She started speaking in Spanish, a language I barely understood. I sighed, looking at my brother with a raised eyebrow. “So, we’re not spending the day together?”

“I’m fourteen. I have other things to worry about than spending time with my older sister.”

I rolled my eyes. When I was his age, I thought the same. Nothing compared to spending my nights out with my friends and having fun. Family was the least of my priorities. The only difference between us was that Balthazar craved the spotlight of being one of the cool kids when I always tried not to be.

I waved him off with a sigh. “Go on, go.”

“Oh, that reminds me.” He smiled as he slid out of the booth. “Nathan James came by the school the other day and earlier, said if I see you to let him know.”

Nathan… so Matthew’s kept his word. I hid the smile tugging at my lips and narrowed my eyes. “Don’t you dare tell him.”

“I won’t. Just thought you should know since he’s around. Said he’s still a bodyguard for us, not that he’s doing much for me.”

He wasn’t doing much for anyone these days.

“You’re still a teen, stuck in school. He probably won’t harass you too much until you’re out. You know… when you take over.”

“Only four more years.” My brother smiled with confidence. He reached for Miguel’s shoulder, pulling him from the booth. “I’ll see you next year then?”

“Sooner, smartass.” I shook my head. Blowing him a kiss, I watched him leave alongside Miguel.

“Well, that’s interesting.” Bunny smiled and looked over with a mouth full of food.

“Don’t start,” I warned her with a sigh.

“What? Nathan’s looking for you,” she said in a matter-of-fact tone.

“Barely, not that it matters.” I shrugged. “After my father died, he disappeared. He’s only around now because he probably feels guilty about it.”

“I don’t know, Karina. I think he misses you.” Bunny looked up and down my body like I was a sight to see, all to annoy me.

“Can we not talk about Nathan anymore? I just want to go out tonight, have some fun, drink, and maybe attempt amateur night and fall flat on my ass.”

“You will if you drink.” Bunny chuckled.

She wasn’t wrong. With six-inch heels and two bottles of alcohol, I wouldn’t even be able to stand. Drinking could wait until the end of the night when we were back at her house.

“Is Vi going to meet us there?”

“I’m not sure.” Banessa sighed softly. That hadn’t surprised me much. Vi hadn’t been around for a while, and ever since Matthews told me about Adam Prince, I was sure it had to do something with my father’s old dealings.

“I have a bone to pick with you first.” She moved from the seat beside me and slid into the seat across from me. “Why haven’t you told me about Adam Prince?” Bunny raised an eyebrow, bringing her glass of coke to her lips. “It’s all over social media that you asked him out.”

I took a deep breath. That was a conversation I didn’t want to get into, especially not with Bunny, who was well aware that I never liked Adam. “I didn’t want to make a big deal about giving him a chance.”

“Why now?” She asked before taking a sip.

“Because… I don’t know.” What could I say? I couldn’t exactly tell her I was doing it all to get Nathan’s attention. That sounded desperate. And I couldn’t tell her that contracts were going around with my father’s forged signature. “I figured why not? He does like me. I just never gave him a chance.”

Bunny nearly choked on her drink. “Wow, that desperate for sex?”

“No.” I shook my head.

“Don’t lie to me. Are you thinking about giving him, of all people, your virginity card?” She narrowed her eyes as she placed her cup down on the table and leaned in.

I looked around, to not catch her gaze. “No…” I glanced down at the table. “I already lost it…” I said, barely a whisper.

Bunny looked at me. I tried to hide my face in shame. I never had the chance to tell her about my first experience. Then again, it wasn’t a necessity for her or anyone else to know.

“Ok, you have a lot of explaining to do. Who was your first, and why didn’t you tell me?”

“It happened before they shot my dad, actually, the night before. It just slipped my mind to tell you after my dad passed away.”

“Please tell me it was Nathan.” Bunny squealed. She had a soft spot for him. I wasn’t exactly sure why, other than the fact that he was older than us and he was nice, but she liked him. Even if he was a dick for leaving me.

I took a deep breath and nodded.

“Oh my god, yes. Did you call him daddy?” She smirked with a chuckle; her eyes were full of mischief.

“No.” I told her with an eye roll. “And what is with you and that specific kink?”

“It’s called a daddy kink. And a lot of customers enjoy it since I look so cute, like a little girl.” Bunny shrugged her shoulders. “So, are you still going to try amateur night?” She, thankfully, changed the subject.

The idea sounded fun, but I’d fail miserably at the task. Sure, I could dance, but climbing up a pole required strength I didn’t have. “Probably not.”

“What about a private room lap dance? That way you won’t have to dance on a pole, and you get extra money.”

I shook my head. “And risk my reputation? No, thank you.” I might have been helping the girls out with their outfits, but I never worked on them at Cherry Pops. They’d come to Banessa’s house so the paparazzi wouldn’t make such a scene if I stepped out.

“I’ll stick to our private room, and the occasional walk around the lounge,” I told her.

“Whatever you say.” Bunny scooted out of the booth and smiled. “We should start heading out. Gotta get myself showered and ready before the night.”

Slipping out of the booth, I reached into my pocket and placed some money on the table.

Tonight would be the night I’d finally have Nathan in the palm of my hands… If he showed.
