SHE DOESN’T NEED A PRINCE CHARMING

NATHAN

I sat, waiting eagerly in the middle of the room.

My eyes trailed over the dancer, who finally made an appearance. Her red stained lips immediately drew my attention. They were forbidden, prohibited from being touched, just as the rest of her body was. Although I normally wouldn’t stare, I couldn’t help but keep my eyes on her. Brown curls draped down just above her chest and the black bikini top only made it pop out more than they would have normally. She even had a matching short skirt that showed off her thick thighs... I flickered my attention back to her lips.

I caught her looking over my body. Her eyes snapped to mine.

“I’m sorry.” The words dripped from her lips like smooth honey.

I smiled with a shrug. “I don’t mind.”

She hummed. Her hips swayed as she strode in my direction. She was making me throb with anticipation. No one could ever catch my attention with just one look, at least not anyone other than Karina.

“Are you new here?” She asked, letting a Russian accent fall from her tongue.

I shook my head. “No, it’s just been a while since I’ve stopped by.”

“Busy man.”

I nodded.

“I hear you’re looking for someone.” She dipped down, her hands pressed against my thighs for support.

My muscles stiffened at her touch. I closed my eyes, trying to regain my composure. I continued to keep my eyes on her face. “Yeah, I am. You might know her. She’s one of Bunny’s friends.”

“Everyone here is a friend of Bunny. Even those who don’t like her.”

I chuckled. It didn’t surprise me at all. Bunny’s powerful personality wasn’t something many could handle. “The woman I’m looking for isn’t a dancer. But she comes around to see her friend every once in a while.”

“Are you referring to Vivianna?”

I shook my head. “No, I mean the other.”

“Oh, you mean the model... Have you tried looking around the stage?” She turned, rubbing her ass against my chest as she swayed her hips in a downward motion until she was sitting on top of me. Her arms reached up, wrapping around my neck. She pulled me close.

I leaned in, my lips inches from her neck. I closed my eyes, restraining myself. “She’s not an easy person to miss.”

“And why’s that?”

“She has a captivating presence. When she’s in the room, no one can look away.” My fingers twitched at my sides as I kept control.

“Her smile lights up the room and her laughter... well, no one can’t help but smile when they hear it.” I reached for her arms and unwrapped them from my neck. I pushed her gently off my lap and helped her to her feet.

She stared at me with an eyebrow raised. She was confused. I could see that.

I stood up from my seat and smiled. Without a word, I headed for the curtain.

“Why are you looking for her?” She called out before I could leave.

A smile tugged at my lips as I stopped in my tracks and turned around. I couldn’t exactly tell her there was an idiot who was forging signatures and trying to make someone else’s kingdom his own. I also couldn’t tell her that I was there to make sure the Vasiliev’s stayed alive. And I damn sure couldn’t tell her the truth about my conflicting feelings. “Because I can’t let anything happen.”

She crossed her arms. “I’m sure she doesn’t need a prince charming.”

No, Karina never did. She was more than capable of handling things on her own, though that didn’t mean she wouldn’t need some help along the way.

“That’s fine. I was always a pawn in this game of life, but she doesn’t see it that way.”

“Then does that make you a knight?”

“I’d be the piece to destroy her enemies. After all, she will be the queen.” I smiled, though I soon shook my head. She still didn’t grasp what I was saying. “If you see her, would you let her know Nathan’s looking for her?”

“Do you like her or something?” She asked, lowering her arms to her sides.

“Don’t get me wrong, you were amazing.” I chuckled. “Caught my attention from the start.”

“But?”

“I respect you and I’d much rather not get tempted to put my hands all over you because once I do, I don’t think I’d be able to stop.”

“Why don’t you just do it?”

That sounded like an invitation, but invitations were dangerous. I wouldn’t get caught up in something like that, not again. “No one should do anything to you without your consent.”

And there it was... the soft look of realization in her eyes. She let her shoulders relax as she took a deep breath. “You already knew.”

“What can I say? I’m good at my job, Karina.” I shrugged. “Besides, do you really think I’d be so thoughtless to not know? I’ve seen those legs more times than I’d want to admit.”

“Your job is to protect and take bullets.” She rolled her eyes.

“It’s also to keep a sharp eye. Know my surroundings and, more importantly, the people around me.”

“So, you knew it was me and thought: might as well take the opportunity?”

“No, I thought I’d play along.” I smiled. “See how far you were willing to go. Didn’t think you’d cause me problems.” My eyes drifted down to my pants, then back up.

“I felt nothing.” She smirked.

“It’s called self-control. Something I was about to lose if I didn’t stop you.”

“Have you always been this—”

“Forward?” I interrupted. “Yes, it’s one of my good qualities. You’d know if we spent more time together.” I stepped towards her and reached for her mask. I pulled it off her face and tossed it to the floor.

“Yeah, well, that’s your fault.” She sighed. “I should have realized it from the chess pieces talk.”

I laughed. “Yeah, I’m surprised you didn’t get that one. We had that conversation about chess pieces the same night.”

“Alright. So, you found me. What now? You bring me back home to your new boss?”

I raised an eyebrow. “Last time I checked, you were my new boss. And Balthazar, but he’s in private school still, so he doesn’t count at the moment.”

Karina scoffed. “I’m not paying you.”

“I’m not asking you to pay me, don’t need you to. I’m volunteering my services at this point.”

“Why?” she asked.

“Do you have to ask so many questions?”

“Are you going to answer your boss or not?” She asked with a smirk.

“Would I get another dance if I’m a good boy?” I smiled back at her.

“Nathan.”

“I love it when you say my name.” A grin twitched at the corner of my lips. “It’s been a while since you have.”

“Oh, shut up.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “I’m still mad at you.”

Yes, I knew that. I’d make up for leaving her alone to deal with her father’s death. “Hate me all you want, Princess,” I said, not taking my eyes off of her. “It’s not gonna change the fact I’m here for you. Now, will you do me a favor and change out of those clothes?”

Karina’s eyes shifted down to her outfit. “I kind of like them. Besides, it’ll give you work.”

I chuckled. “By fending off the assholes who try to touch you, myself included.”

“Exactly.”

Shaking my head, I unbuttoned my black blazer and pulled it off. I draped it over her shoulders and buttoned it back up. “Doesn’t cover everything, but it’ll have to do.”

“So you wouldn’t have touched me if I was someone else?” She raised an eyebrow.

I smiled at her sudden interest. Leaning forward, I whispered into her ear, “Nope, only you.”
