I’ve never had a boyfriend before.

Getting so close to him and Bones, I needed to know he wasn’t going to bring another woman home one day.

I feared him saying, “What? I never said we were exclusive.”

But he strode back, wrapped his arms around me pulled me flush to him, and said, “You’re my girlfriend. Nobody else gets to touch you. Nobody else gets to touch me.”

His body was trembling. I sensed there was something else he wanted to say, but then he just smirked.

Reaching up, I cupped his face. “Okay then. Have a good day, boyfriend.”

He laughed, kissing my forehead. “And you, girlfriend.”

After watching him leave, I double-checked all the alarms were set.

I’ve spent the day playing with Bones, trying to train him a little – simple stuff like sit, down, stay – and working on my graphic design course.

Now, Bones can’t contain his energy anymore. He lets out a yap, as though reminding me to remember we’re handling important business here.

“Sorry, boy,” I say. “I was thinking about you-know-who.”

I’ve started saying you-know-who instead of Pearce because Bones already recognizes his name. Or maybe he can scent something in me, the way my hope flickers whenever I say it.

“Okay… go.”

Bones ducks his head and sprints across the patio, leaping onto my shoe.

I laugh and rush forwards, scooping it up before he can do any real damage. “We need to get you some new toys, hmm? Maybe I’ll ask you-know-who about it.”

After training some more, I take Bones inside and we settle down in the living room. When he curls up at my feet, I have to remind myself I’m being paid for this.

Paid well.

By my boyfriend.

My boyfriend who’s being targeted by some shady character from his past.

My mind spins trying to process it all, trying to make it fit. It all seems like something that happens to other girls, not to me, never to me.

My eyes fall closed and suddenly I’m staring through a shimmering veil, Pearce’s features distorted in the light. But his smile is clear, and so is the striking color of his eyes.

He lifts the veil, revealing eyes brimming with joy, but then he leans forward and licks my cheek.

I laugh myself awake, finding Bones perched in my lap. He whines and paws at me, and then rolls onto his side and rubs himself against me.

“Hungry, boy?”

That gets a reaction.

He leaps down, bounding through the house towards the kitchen. I walk into the hallway and check that the alarm is still active.

Without the hammering of the rain – the storm has passed now – the big house feels unusually quiet.

As I take down his bowl and prepare his food, I think about the problem I’ve been pondering all day. The more I think about it, the more certain I am that not telling Pearce the truth is going to make things so much more difficult.

It’s not as though Bones is always going to be between us, making touching impossible. Once he’s calmed down he’s going to most likely return to his bed in the living room.

I lean against the counter, watching him eat.

Once he’s calmed down?

He’s chilled out now, his nose buried in his bowl, his tail wagging as he demolishes his food.

That means tonight Pearce is going to want to pick up where we left off. Pearce asked me last night to stay for a next couple of days to get to know each other and of course, watch over Bones. And of course, I said yes. Mom wasn’t too happy about me spending more time here but I’m an adult and ultimately it’s my choice.

Last night, even with Bones between us, I was sure I could feel the desire radiating from Pearce, as though he was sending a scent across the room, tempting me in the most animalistic way.

I imagine him coming home, grabbing me, kissing me as any boyfriend would. His lust growing and his hands roaming over me with more urgency, his fingers sliding up my inner thigh, seeking out my sex.

I know I’ll be wet. Ready for him.

Dropping me down on his bed, his cock springing free, massive and intimidating, and then—

I can’t think about what happens next. My mind blanks completely, a dark curtain falling, as I try to visualize the next step.

“Okay, boy,” I say, once Bones is done eating. “I think it’s time. I can’t keep it locked inside forever, can I? I just have to put on my big girl pants and get this done.”

Bones mostly ignores me as I open the back door for him. It’s like he wants to make sure the yard is still there every time he eats his dinner.

I stand on the patio, arms folded across my middle, hugging my body in a vain attempt to offer myself some comfort.

Pearce said he wants to be my boyfriend, but he had that smirk on his face, as though the whole thing was a big joke.
