The pieces won’t fit together.

I raise my eyebrows in a question.

She stands and walks over to the window, good boy Bones faithfully following her, looking up as he – like me – waits to see what she’ll do.

“I’ve never told anyone this before,” she says, her back to me, her shape outlined gorgeously in the late afternoon sunlight. “I guess you’d normally talk to your friends about this, but apart from a few girls in my course, I don’t really have any. And we don’t talk about personal stuff.”

She spins, taking a bolstering breath. “I’m just going to say it. And then you can see how you feel after.”

Now my curiosity is firing nonstop.

I’ve never told anyone this before.

Is that about her mother?

“I’m a virgin, Pearce.”

Joyous laughter erupts out of me. It comes from a place of pure relief, as all the terrible options that were flying around my mind are suddenly destroyed.

It isn’t about finishing our new relationship.

It isn’t about how her mother dislikes me, or the age gap.

She’s a virgin. Maybe she’s scared she isn’t going to be good enough for me but that’s preposterous.

I’m still laughing when she stalks from the room, her fists clenched. Whatever words she says – more like yells – are lost as I bring my laughter to an end.

Dammit.

I should’ve thought about how she’d react to my laughter.

“Piper, wait.”

I stand and follow her down the hallway, my savage intent never calming.

As she walks up the stairs, my gaze can’t help but be drawn to her ass shifting from side to side. Her round globes dance in time with her rage.

I quiet down that impulse to take her, willing myself to focus on her feelings.

Upsetting my woman isn’t something I want to do.

Ever.

She’s in my bedroom, her bag on the bed. A spark ignites in me when I see she’s taken her bag here, already making herself at home, despite the livid hate in her eyes when she spins on me.

“I guess it’s all a big joke to you, right?” she rages. “I’m just a silly girl who should’ve done what you really wanted. You wanted somebody to fuck, period. Full stop. No more information required. And now that I’m a virgin, what, you’re going to laugh me out of your house? Don’t worry. I’m going.”

She shoves her laptop into her bag, looking around as though searching for more items. I find my gaze following her, mentally filling up my home with all the fragments of life she’s going to bring with her.

I can’t wait.

With a huff, she zips up her bag, pausing only when Bones jumps onto the bed and stands on his back legs.

He paws at the air, willing her to come closer.

“I’m sorry for yelling, little man.”

She leans down and he approaches, softly nuzzling the back of her hand, whining when she scratches the top of his head.

“I’m sorry, but I have to go.”

“No, you don’t,” I say, taking a step forward.

She shoots me a look. “You made it pretty clear.”

“Stop being so sassy and bratty. And let me explain.”

She gasps, straightening and marching over to me.

Despite her evident anger, my lips can’t help but twitch at her sudden confidence. It tells me our children are going to be fiery, feisty, ready to defend themselves when they’ve been wronged.

“Did you just call me a brat?”

“And I called you sassy.” I smirk. “I shouldn’t have laughed, Piper. That was a dumb move. But I’m not laughing at you.”

“Then what are you laughing at?” she demands. “It took so much to tell you that. It took so much to even get the words out. I honestly thought I was going to be sick. I’ve been going crazy wondering how you’d react and then you laugh…”

I wrap my arms around her, my smirk dropping. She resists my embrace at first, but then she sinks against me, resting her cheek against my chest. I kiss her forehead and smooth my hands down her back, and manage to keep them on her hips instead of dropping lower.

“I laughed because I was relieved,” I tell her. “The way you were acting… I thought it was going to be something much, much, much worse.”

Her news isn’t even bad at all, let alone cataclysmic, or something to provoke so much anger and sadness.

Her news is the opposite.

It means I get her all to myself, always, forever. It means that no other man is ever going to lay his hands on her. It means when I stretch out her pink hole, I’ll be the only cock she’s ever felt inside of her.

I’ll be her man, completely. Just like she’s my woman.

“Like what?” she asks, leaning back in my embrace.

I almost tell her how sassy she looks again, but I can read the suspicion in her expression. She might think I’m trying to deflect away from my laughter.
