“What is going on here, I know we haven’t crossed paths in a while Myla, but I didn’t expect this sort of reaction,” said Darcy, as she rounded the tree and looked from one to the other.

Myla swiveled her body around to face her nemesis, her figure a blur in Kai’s vision at the speed of which she did it. “You come to steal Rhett from me too?” She challenged in a voice that Kai didn’t recognize as Myla’s.

“Rhett? I thought his name was Kai?”

“Shows what you know eh? This is my fiancé, Rhett. Tell her baby,” snapped Myla. She turned to look over her shoulder towards him, it was a look that made it perfectly clear if he didn’t go along with another lie, she would castrate him. Another lie? Fuck Sakes.

“How in the name of Jays us are ya?” He asked with a crooked smile and his best Irish accent, as he nodded.

They watched her eyebrows furrow in confusion as she looked from Myla to Kai, her chest began to heave up and down and she shook her head. “No, we met a couple of days ago, you helped me change my flat tire. You’re called Kai.”

“No, not me butter face, must have my good looks confused with some other scaly,” Kai continued with a smirk.

She looked at him through squinted eyes and gulped, “Really? Because I could have sworn you were the same man from a few days ago, are you here for a wedding too?”

“Only ours,” piped up Myla. “We get married tomorrow, not that it’s any of your damned business.”

Darcy’s eyebrows shot up to meet her hairline and her jaw dropped, Myla stood with a triumphant look plastered on her face. Kai slinked an arm around her shoulders and pulled her sideways into his chest. “Yer I marry my babby tommora, so what’s the craic between you’s?” He continued, still in his Irish accent.

“I’m sorry, what the hell did you just say?” Darcy asked, but Kai could see it written all over her face, she wasn’t buying any of this.

“He said, why don’t you take a long jog off a short pier,” Myla retorted with a snort.

“For god’s sake Myla, isn’t it about time we buried this feud between us, it’s been what, eight years?” Snapped Darcy folding her arms across her chest.

“The only burying I would love to do, is to bury you six feet under. You and Casper broke my heart,” she spat taking a step closer to her.

“Myla, I’m sorry, it was never supposed to happen the way it did.”

“Sorry? You’re sorry?” Gasped Myla taking another step closer to her. She felt Kai grab her arm to prevent her from going any further, but she fiercely shrugged it free.

“Did Casper ever tell you what happened?” Darcy asked, her eyes grew larger and she took a step back.

“Do I look like I really give two fucks what happened? Did you two give a shit about me? Did you two ever stop to think about me in my dress making my way to the church to get married, whilst you two were running off boarding a plane together?”

“It wasn’t planned to happen that way, Casper was supposed to…” She trailed off and began chewing on the inside of her mouth.

“You betrayed me, Darcy. All those times I sat there pouring my heart out to you about my doubts and reservations over the wedding, and all the times I sat and cried because I had suspicions he was cheating on me and you convinced me it was all in my head, but all along he was cheating on me, with you. And now you want me to forgive and forget?” She roared. Her fists balled at her sides, her body shook from head to toe and before Kai could comprehend what was happening, Myla pulled back her arm and punched Darcy square in the face.

She dropped to the floor and a strangled scream tore from her mouth, her hand clamping over her bloody nose. Myla took another step closer and leant over the crumpled heap of Darcy. “I’ll never forgive you, Darcy, never. If I ever see you again, next time I’ll make sure your father will have to scrape you up from the sidewalk,” Myla hissed lowly through gritted teeth.

“Myla,” she cried through her hand as she watched her walk away from her.

Kai walked over to her and crouched down, “I’m a gentleman, Darcy and I don’t condone hitting women, but I’ve already put Casper in hospital so if you dare say anything to anyone about who I really am, trust me you’ll have more than Myla to worry about.” Flashing her his best smile he patted her on the back, stood up and took off after Myla, leaving Darcy crying on the ground.

“Myla,” he gasped out of breath when he caught up with her further down the road.

Ignoring him, she continued to steam-roll her way down the road, her body rigid with angst and her hands clenching in and out of fists as she kept them held firmly to her legs. Pushing himself a bit faster he latched his hand on her shoulder and brought her to a sudden stop. Moving himself in front of her he brought her face up from its stooped position. Her eyes were red and puffy, and tears spilled from them. He watched them roll and bringing his thumbs to her cheeks, he wiped them away before resting his forehead against hers. “Juliet, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to tell her who I was or why I was here, I never thought I’d see her again, I know I’ve fucked up,” he whispered.

She brought her hands up to rest on his. “It’s not your fault,” she whimpered, “it’s mine, this whole ridiculous idea of a fake fiancé is just a big fat joke.”

“I don’t agree with you. If you hadn’t gone to these extreme lengths, we would never have met,” he replied pulling her into his chest and enveloping her in a crushing hug. She inhaled heavily and he felt her body wilt in his arms. “These tears are not just about your mother, Myla, this is also about Casper and Darcy, isn’t it?”

She nodded and bit back more tears threatening to spill. It had been eight years since she felt the first sting of heartache at what her best friend had done, and seeing her had brought everything flooding back. The hurt, the betrayal, the humiliation, and the resentment. As she smashed her fist into Darcy’s face, she finally felt some satisfaction, but it was only fleeting.

Pulling away from Kai, she took a step back. “I can’t do this anymore, Kai. I?

?m sorry,” she muttered.
