CHAPTER 2

Maxim

I sit back in my chair and go over the file folder that I just received. This one is thick with tons of notes, covered in bad handwriting.

Still, that doesn't even faze me when normally it would. The Moretti's are idiots, they’re so worried about protecting their sweet sister, they're not focusing on everything else.

It hardly took me much of an effort, little to be honest, but I was able to snag one of the guards over to my side. Like I've always said, everyone loves money. Even if you're being paid quite well, and from what I understand Jax pays his people very well.

This guy's just one greedy son of a bitch. I like to either get the information through my phone or handwritten notes.

No one there is none the wiser, every time my guy pulls out his notebook and writes something down, nobody says anything. This whole damn family wouldn't be in this shitty situation if they paid attention to what the fuck they were doing in the first place.

My sister might even be alive if the Moretti's were more invested on who they hire, rather than just getting jobs done. They say they're out for the good, but I think they're just out for the money and power.

I grabbed the pictures that I was given and start to look through them. At the same time, two different emotions are running through me, both happiness and sadness.

I'm happy that Anna looks as miserable as I do. Like she hasn't slept the month we've been apart, either. It looks like my girl misses me just as much.

I'm also sad because she looks as miserable as I do. I don't want to hurt her in any way, and I definitely don't want any harm to come to her now.

That makes me cringe and I rub the back of my neck. I was going to kill her two months ago. I was dead set on it. Either she has me bewitched or she's ‘the one,’ all I know is that I fell hard.

Now that I've got her in my sights, she's never going to go anywhere, she'll never leave. She will live in a gilded cage for the rest of her life if need be. I won't lose her again, ever.

The man gave me a detailed account. I've read about her sparring session with Colt. She lost which is odd, she rarely ever loses.

He also said that another man named Ray Sanchez practiced with them, she didn't spar with him, but she watched those two.

He informs me in his notes that she was actually happy and laughing as they were messing around.

It also says she got hit hard, her concentration wasn't there. She's going to be hurting for a couple days.

I put the folder away. I have a filing cabinet with all the other notes and copies of the text messages I was sent. A couple of the pictures I leave out. I just like looking at her, well, more recent ones anyway.

I send a message to Booker and a few of the other guys. He handpicked them for this next job we've been working on.

It takes them less than five minutes to get to my office. Booker comes in with a knowing smirk, as the other two guards walk in cautiously. I guess everybody's afraid of my moods lately.

I've been drinking more than normal, especially when I get frustrated and can't figure out how to get Anna back. Me drunk does not equal a fun time. It's usually a miserable time for everyone around.

The guys have patched the several holes I punched into the walls. One I gifted a broken arm because he decided to talk to me about my drinking. He's taking extended time off right now.

He crossed the line when he decided to get in my business. I still haven't decided if I want him back yet. I’ll make up my mind later. I need to find out just how much of an asset he was to Booker.

All the men sit down in the little seating area that's between my desk and the door. I don't bother to get up. I'll be able to hear them from here.

“Is everything ready?” I ask as I look all three of them in the eyes.

The guards nod as Booker just stares at me, his brows are furrowed. He’s probably wondering what's going on in my damn head, as I am his.

He sighs. Damn, I don't want to do this shit again with him. It's been a constant battle for the past month. Being my right-hand man, and the guy I grew up with, he’s more like a brother to me, he's the only one that can do this shit and get away with it.

I quickly shake my head, not now. I'm not going to do this. We need to go over the plans and make sure everybody's organized and ready.

Booker gives me a brief nod in understanding. We both know this isn't over yet. He'll continue this conversation later.

One of the men sitting across from Booker decides to break the silence. “We've locked down his location after studying him for a few months.”

I just stare at him waiting for him to go on. “We bribed a few of his co-workers to find out any more information, but there is one slight problem.”

The guard is being a little dramatic by making me wait for it. “What is it?” I snap. I don't have time for this shit. That's what the meeting is for so we can talk about this.

“He hasn't been at work in over a month, he's been holed up.” The man looks down at his shoelaces like they might need to be tied.

Booker chimes in, “I've got a plan and place for this.” Booker looks down at the guys shoes in confusion and then continues, “there's someone he’ll never say no to. When they call and ask for help, he'll be there.”

They all can probably see the relief that flashes over my face. It took a while for me to come up with this plan and longer for them to help me fine tune it. But, it's one that will work, and it will work damn well.

“Can you make sure everything is lined up. I want to have this done in the next couple of days,” I say to Booker.

The men leave and say goodbye, while Booker stays. “This obsession you have with Anna isn't good for anyone. Others are going to start seeing you as weak and take advantage of that. Hell, they might even go after her themselves.”

And now it starts.

The same thing that's been happening for the last month. I've been putting up with him just because of his position in my company. I can no longer do it.

I put my elbows on the desk and fold my fingers together. I make sure he’s paying attention, and knows that I'm not fucking around.

Booker moves back a little, he knows what's about to come. “I'm not going to tell you again. You work for me, we're not friends or blood family. You have a job to do and this is what I want done. I don't give a shit what other people think. I want my girl and I'm getting her back.”

Booker doesn't say anything. I know that he got the message. I just sit there and watch as his jaw clenches.

“You’re the boss,” he states as he stands up grabbing his phone out of his pocket, then a folder that's been laying on the table.

We spend the next hour and a half over drinks and dinner going through the details of how to get the link to Anna away from his seclusion, then right into our arms.

Booker gets a message and has to leave. Everything is back to normal with us, I won't hear anything about Anna from him anymore. Like it should have been in the beginning.

I sit back in my desk and just took over the pictures of my girl that I've collected. It won’t be long.
