“So what’s the catch?”

“Privacy issues,” he said. “You have to opt-in to the app and agree to have your location shared with our servers.”

“So, if someone hacked your servers, that would mean they had access to the locations of millions of people using the app?” My eyes widened. “Jesus, that’s nightmarish.”

“Currently, the locations are locked behind the highest levels of security, and we’ve got a cyclical operation whereby we’re constantly recycling the locations and numbers and encrypting information sent to us, so only people who actually work for us know the whereabouts of folks using the app.” He paused, handing me the phone back. “We’ve spared no expense.”

“You sound like that dude from Jurassic Park. We spared no expense,” I replied. “Remember? He was eating custard or some shit while the dinosaurs were ravaging the park and the kid was getting electrocuted.”

“Spoilers.”

“That movie came out in ’93. And you get my point.”

“I would rather die than let anyone with nefarious ulterior motives hack my app,” he said, but his brow wrinkled slightly. “We’re updating our security protocol daily.”

“Sheesh. You would rather die? Sounds a bit dramatic.”

He poked me on the arm. “What about you?” he asked. “Emmy mentioned you were acting?”

“Is that what they’re calling it nowadays?” I shrugged, suddenly aware of how exposed I was in this dress.

His gaze was hot on the side of my face. The ease of our chatter had scraped back some of the tension, but now it crept back in. My skin prickled, and I was tempted to lean into him, inhale him and let him cup my cheek in those warm, tan fingers.

Snap out of it!

I busied myself with tucking my phone into my clutch, avoiding his stare and my dirty thoughts about rolling around in the sand with him.

“Tell me what you want,” he said.

“Um.”

“You want um?” Matt’s voice cracked with mirth. “I meant out of life. What do you want?”

“That’s a loaded question,” I replied.

“You don’t always have to divert away from questions, Summer. I’m genuinely curious.”

I shouldn’t be talking to him about any of it. He was the enemy. We couldn’t avoid our problems and our past forever. He’d taken my virginity, and he’d walked away. I had too. And now, the past sat like a wedge between us, but the longer I stayed here, the faster it melted away.

“I want to follow my dreams of acting,” I said. “I’ve been working and saving for years. I’ve spent every spare bit of cash I have on courses and classes and trying to fill out my resume. I’ve gotten some odd jobs, like commercials and videos – you know like the one you mentioned earlier,” as I gave him a smirk and eye roll, “but it’s been more than ten years now, and I’ve plateaued. Actually, no I’ve cruised further down into the valley. So, that’s my sob story.”

“Don’t give up, Summer.” he said immediately. “Follow your dreams. I remember the raw talent you had. Keep at it, okay?”

“OK, motivational cat poster.”

He laughed again. “Man, Summer, I’ve missed this.”

I pressed my lips together and dusted sand off my feet. I’d placed my shoes next to me, and the silver straps caught the light occasionally. “I have too. But that doesn’t mean anything.”

“Doesn’t it?”

“What do you want it to mean?”

“That we can be friends again,” he said and rose from the sand, offering me a hand. “Let’s keep walking.” He helped me out of the sand and took my shoes from me. “I’ll carry these.”

We walked along, the cool air drawing goosebumps to my skin.

“You look amazing tonight,” he said.

“Thank you,” I managed, my breath catching in my throat.

We wound down toward the water, and it was warm as it washed over our feet.

Matt took my hand.

“What are you doing,” I whispered, his fingers intertwining with mine.

“What I want. You should try it sometime.”

Matt turned toward me, brought my hand up, and placed it on the side of his neck. His arm looped around my waist and drew me close to his body. My breasts against his chest. His dark eyes consuming me, moonlight glinting in them.

His lips drew closer, eclipsing my vision. His breaths were hot against my lips.

“Remember?” It wasn’t a question.

“Yes,” I said, regardless.

His lips pressed against mine. He claimed me, his tongue massaging mine, drawing heat and desperation and every emotion I’d ignored for the longest time when it came to him. I moaned against his mouth, leaning into him, my pussy throbbing. My skin grew hot.

He cupped my cheek with his free hand, stroking his fingers over my skin, drawing gentle waves of pleasure, matching them with the pressure of his kiss.

I lost my breath and leaned into him, my knees growing weak.

Finally, we broke apart.

I rested my head against his chest, breathing hard and squeezing my eyes shut then opening them again.
