Bareback again. Touching in every possible way.

“Fuck, Summer. What am I going to do about you,” he whispered. “You’ve got me.”

It was the first time he’d said anything remotely like it. Instead of “You’re mine,” it was “I’m yours.”

I arched into him, pressing my breasts to his naked chest and meeting his gaze again. His eyes were glazed over from pleasure, but he kept hold of me, his lips parted, his muscles straining with every thrust.

“I’m close,” I whispered, my legs shuddering and losing their grip around his waist. “I’m so close. I’m coming. Oh my god, I’m coming.”

“Come for me.”

And I did. I lost myself in waves of pleasure, gripping his arms and hands, shuddering.

“Fuck,” he grunted, and his cock thickened inside me. He let go, pulsing once, twice, three times, and filling me with his need. He bent over me after, breathing hard, his forehead pressed to mine. “Quick,” he replied. “Sorry about that.”

“Sorry? There’s the whole night ahead of us.” I held the sides of his face, stroking my thumbs over the stubble on his chin. “Besides, that’s kind of the way I wanted it.”

“It is?” he said, laughing. “Why’s that?”

“Because it was…hot. I don’t know what to tell you, man. I like it when you’re so overcome with desire for me, you just throw me down on the bed and have your way with me. Is that so strange?”

“I guess not,” Matt gave me another quick kiss on the forehead. It was light and sweet. He withdrew from me, though, and the expression on his face wasn’t satisfied. There was something bugging him. “You want something to eat? I could eat some fries. Maybe a steak.”

“That sounds great,” I said and got up too.

I headed through to the bathroom to wash up and then dressed hurriedly afterward. Something wasn’t quite right here, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Before the sex and after it. Matt was quieter. Was it because of what had happened?

Why though? What did it have to do with anything?

I studied my reflection in the mirror and fixed my hair. It didn’t make much difference. I needed another shower and a good night’s sleep. Tonight had been way too much to handle.

Out in the room, Matt had already summoned the food up, and it had arrived. The cart had come complete with a rose in a crystal vase and a candle. It was unlit.

“That’s cute,” I said.

“If you say so.” Matt didn’t light the candle. He carried the plates over to the coffee table and set them down.

I sat next to him and brought one closer to me. T-bone steak with pepper sauce and crispy, salty fries. I fed one into my mouth and relished the flavor. Matt dug right into the T-bone.

I studied the side of his face, the growing doubt doubling. “You OK? You’re quiet.”

“Fine,” he said.

“Did what happened tonight get to you? It wasn’t your fault, you know that, right?”

“It was directly my fault,” he said without looking at me. “But it’s been handled now. Emmy’s wedding will go off without a hitch. You’re safe. And Cruz will go away for a long time if I have anything to say about it.” He paused, spearing a sliver of meat on the end of his fork. “And trust me, I will have a lot to say about it.”

“OK.” I ate a couple more fries, chewing thoughtfully. None of the comfort that had been present after the first time we’d been together was there. Nor after the second or third or any of the past fucking few days. “I’ve been thinking,” I said.

“About?”

“Maybe we shouldn’t just call it after this,” I said.

“Meaning what, exactly?” Asked in clipped tones. Well, that was hardly a good sign.

“That once we’re back in Florida, we could continue this arrangement.” It took a lot for me to even suggest it. I didn’t want to feel anything for him, and I didn’t. Not really. Liar. Not in the way that I should’ve. I was just…it was nice. To do this.

“That’s not a good idea,” he said instantly. “We’ll only regret it if we take this back to the mainland.”

“But, I mean, come on. Matt, we’ve done this before.”

“And it ended in unhappiness,” he said. “We shouldn’t be thinking of ourselves, now, but of Emilia.” He cut off another piece of steak and ate it.

That was that? He’d just completely turned from me.

“I see,” I said.

“What do you see?” he asked, turning his head to look at me.

His gaze was so fierce, it nearly took my breath away. Nearly. Fuck it, the only thing that had really taken my breath away when it came to him was his touch. Not his stern expressions.

“You’re scared.”

“Scared.” He laughed, almost hysterically, but not quite. “That’s funny, Summer. You’ve got quite the imagination.”
