After he was gone I dropped into the seat, took out my phone, and plugged it into the office charger. But when I turned it on, what I saw on the screen made me gasp.

It was a notification for an ended call, one that was about five minutes long. And that was with Sean.

I’d butt-dialed the dude. And he’d heard everything.

Chapter Thirteen

SEAN

The ocean breeze was exactly what I needed. Drink in hand, I closed my eyes behind my Ray Bans and took it in.

When I finally opened my eyes, the vista there at Venice Beach was just as nice. The sun shone bright overhead, the surf looked really inviting, and the sand crawled with the sort of impossibly good-looking beachgoers that seemed to only exist in LA.

Truth be told, however, I was using this particular view as a distraction from the one I was much, much more interested in. Specifically, a gorgeous girl with auburn hair, her legs in those tiny jeans shorts looking a way I could only describe as “good as hell.”

Me and the guys and the women were at the beachfront bar, enjoying some Saturday afternoon drinks. It was another wedding get-together, the usual crew and a few other friends. I’d known Shania was going to be there, of course, but I wasn’t prepared for exactly what it would feel like seeing her for the first time since our, ahem, bathroom antics.

I couldn’t get the damn woman out of my mind. It seemed like every time I closed my eyes I’d picture the way she’d looked on the bathroom counter in front of me, her milky thighs wrapped around my waist, her hands on my shoulders, her teeth biting down onto her lower lip as I pushed my cock into her again and again…

“Fuck,” I hissed, noticing that I was half-hard from the thought. “That’s the last thing you need to be thinking about, dumbass.”

And then there was also the matter of our agreement to keep things nice and platonic—an agreement I’d promptly violated with my horned-up texts. She’d responded to them in the correct, “down boy” kind of way—good thing one of us had the presence of mind to act like an adult.

But thinking back to those texts had a two-part effect on me: Amused and turned-on, of course, but then pissed-off as hell when I remembered the phone conversation I’d listened in on. Her boss had been speaking to her like a total dick, and just imagining his words was enough to make me want to clock the asshole.

Right in the middle of the surge of anger, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around and there she was.

However good Shania looked from a distance, up close was something even more ridiculous. The effect she had on me was like being fourteen and summoning up the urge to talk to a high school crush, feelings I hadn’t felt in years.

Feelings I hadn’t felt since I’d known her in college, to be specific.

“Hey,” she said.

“Hey,” I replied.

“Not used to seeing you play the wallflower.” She smiled, drink in hand.

Yeah, it was unlike me. Normally I was always in the mood for social stuff like this. Shania had me all kinds of out of sorts.

“Just still trying to get my head back into the real world. You go on tour for long enough, and you forget what a normal social thing is like.”

“Well,” she said. “If it’d make things more comfortable for you I’m sure we could get some turntables set up or something. Get your ones and twos here, or whatever you call them.” Another killer smile.

“Yeah. Definitely run that by the couple. Couples. Still having a hard time saying that.”

“I know,” she said. “But the more I think about it, the cooler it is. Two huge, awesome parties rolled up into one. All our friends together while four of them actually get married.”

“No kidding.”

We were dancing around the issue, and I could feel it. Someone had to bring up the issue, and it might as well be me.

“OK. You butt-dialed me the other day.”

Her easy smile went flat. “I did, I did.”

“Which is weird, because I didn’t even think it was possible to still do that. That’s more of a Blackberry thing, right?

“Well, I found a way to do it. When you texted me I typed something up and hit ‘send’ without looking, and turns out I’d accidently hit your contact info button. Then I guess when I stuffed my phone back into my pocket I hit the dial button.”

“That’d do it.”

She gave me an inquisitive look. “How…how much of that did you hear?”

No sense in holding back. “Enough to hear that your boss is a fucking dick.”

“I know, I know.” She almost looked ashamed.

“Seriously—Where the hell does he get off talking to you like that?”
