But then again, wasn’t that what he was offering? Nothing serious, nothing with any gross, complicated emotions involved—only fun.

I just had to be “cool.” And, of course, me wanting to get some answers about why he did what he’d done all those years ago would be the total, complete antithesis of “cool.”

“And then after the wedding?”

He shrugged.

“We can figure that out once the wedding’s over. But for now let’s enjoy a good thing while we have it, right?”

“OK. I think…I think that sounds good.”

Truth be told, I didn’t know how the hell I thought. I wanted him, and I wanted to not make my and his thing a, well, thing during the wedding planning. But…

After the wedding. Drama could wait.

But then something else popped into my mind at that moment. Namely, the whole reason for our Mexican food excursion in the first place.

“Your job. You’re worried about it.”

What the hell? Did I accidently do the thing where I talked out loud when I thought I was, well, thinking?

“Huh?”

“You looked worried there for a second. Not hard to guess what it might be about.”

Damn, he was good.

“I suppose so. I mean, I did just lose my job with no backup plan.”

“It was for the best. That dick didn’t deserve another second of your time.”

“Easy for you to say. You and I aren’t exactly in the same financial circumstances.” I swept my hand towards his massive bedroom and the view outside of it. It was tacky to talk about something like that, sure, but damned if it wasn’t true. Sean was loaded, and my only option was to start living off my spa savings until I could manage to beat out the thousands of wannabe actors in the city for a coffee shop job to make ends meet.

“True. But maybe this will end up being the push you need to open your spa. A kick in the butt.”

“The only butt-kicking that’s going to happen is me being kicked out of whatever bank my unemployed ass goes into for a loan. Well, probably some laughing, and then the butt-kicking.”

Now it was his turn for a thoughtful expression. But unlike me, evidently, Sean was far harder to read.

“What’s up?”

“It’s that I can’t help but feel like what happened is kinda my fault. I mean, I did storm into that office and start chewing out that dick. Doubt that made matters any better.”

“No. I appreciate you saying that, but I did what I did because I decided to, not because anyone forced me.”

“Still. I want to help make things right.”

“How?”

Another thoughtful expression. “I don’t know. But I’ll think of something.”

Silence fell, the heaviness of the situation weighing on me.

“Well, at least now you’ve got one-hundred percent of your time to devote to maid-of-honor duties.” He checked himself. “Sorry. Probably too soon for cracks like that.”

Well, he wasn’t wrong.

“Anyway, we’ll figure something out.”

I didn’t share his confidence, but like before, his unflappable attitude actually made me feel better.

“And speaking of wedding duties…”

“Uh-oh.”

“Not uh-oh. Just another get-together. Noah sent me a text while you were napping and said he wanted to see us all tonight, a small thing downtown. Feel up for it?”

“Not gonna lie, part of me feels like the only thing I’m up for is curling into a ball and hiding under my blankets.”

“Worst thing you could do.” He tossed the sheets off him and exposed his perfect, cut body.

Another nice distraction he was kind enough to provide.

He hopped out of bed, his cock hanging long and loose before wrapping a sheet around his hips and grabbing my hand.

“Step one is not giving in. Now come on—we’ve got a wedding to make sure is the best one ever.” He flashed me another killer smile.

“OK,” I said. “Let’s do this.”

Chapter Seventeen

SHANIA

Like the party at Will and Sam’s, the “little get-together” downtown was far more than that. The gathering was in one of the top floors of one of the downtown skyscrapers, the view looking out over the impossibly vast and glittering span of LA.

Somehow, word had gotten out. Not only had a text from Pepper let me know that there were more guests there than the gang had been anticipating, but the freaking paparazzi had shown up. Maybe since on account of two very high-profile couples getting married, but it was still a shock to show up in my Uber and step out to a swarm of people snapping pictures and trying to figure out who the hell I was.

Thankfully, Sean had arrived at the same time. We’d split up earlier in the day so as not to look suspicious showing up together. And good thing, because if the two of us had stepped out of the same car, there wasn’t a doubt in my mind we’d be on all those stupid gossip blogs within hours. Sean was known for being seen with some of the most beautiful women in the music biz on his arm, and while they might’ve been totally cool with the attention, I sure wasn’t.
