It was a nice dick.

But none of that was anything I could say. I had to think of something, and fast.

“He…had a DJ set.”

Very, very nicely played, Shania. Expert-level bullshitting all around.

“He had a DJ set?” asked Aaron, putting his hands on his big hips. “Are you…are you kidding me?”

“Secret…show?”

I glanced over my shoulder as Mavis, one of the old guards of the Circus Maximus and possibly the coworker I was closest to there, entered. The look on her face made it clear that she’d realized she’d walked right into the middle of something.

“Should I…?” she asked, pointing back to the door she’d come in from.

Aaron let out a frustrated sigh as he swept back a few hairs from the world’s worst combover. “We’ll talk about this later. Believe me—we’re not done here.”

With that, he turned around on his square-toed dress shoes and was out of there. After a few seconds passed to make sure he was gone, I dropped down into the nearest chair and let out a sigh of relief.

“Wow,” said Mavis, taking her own seat on the sweep of marble counters in front of the bank of vanity mirrors. “What was that all about?”

Where to even begin? With Mavis I could at least be kind of open about the whole thing.

“Ever get a client that you know, and it’s kind of weird to take care of them?”

“Never,” said Mavis, turning around to the mirror and checking her trim, sharp features and jet-black bob. “I used to wait tables, and every now and then people I knew would come in and it was the most awkward thing in the world waiting on them. So when I felt like I had enough clout with our friend Mr. Stump I told him I needed veto power over whatever clients I got.”

She turned back toward me, realizing why I was asking the question. “Oh no,” she said. “What happened?”

I took a deep breath and started. “Well, I had a client. A VIP. And a VIP that I know. And a VIP that I know who I kinda-sorta…slept with. A VIP that I know and that I kinda-sorta slept with and who was kinda-sorta the first guy I’d ever slept with.”

Mavis’s big blue eyes went wide, and it was clear I didn’t need to explain the gravity of the situation to her any further.

“Was that the guy who hurried out?” she asked. “The one who was still all shiny from the oil?”

“The one and only.”

“What did you do?” she asked. “You didn’t, um, try to turn his massage into that kind we don’t really offer around here, did you?”

“No!” I practically shouted. “Not that at all. It was more that I was trying to get through it without him recognizing me. His face was in the hole and everything, and I don’t think he recognized my voice. Of course, I said something that gave away that we knew each other.”

“Oh no,” said Mavis, now totally into the story, her legs crossed as she leaned in.

“That’s not the worst part.”

“It gets worse?”

“There’s the reason he hurried out of here twenty minutes into an Augustus.”

I finished the sordid tale, telling her about the jump and the blanket slipping off and the…third party in the story.

“Wow,” she said. “Just…hanging out? Flopping around?”

I nodded, the mortification returning.

“And…was it big?”

“Mavis!” I broke out in a smile in spite of myself.

“What? Might as well get all the deets.”

I hesitated for a moment. “Yeah,” I said. “Really big.”

Mavis, never one to hold back, put her hands up, palms together, and slowly moved them apart.

“Tell me when I’m close.”

“Keep going…keep going…”

Mavis’s eyebrows went up as she moved her hands further and further apart.

“Seriously?” she asked.

“Seriously.” Another few inches of distance later, I spoke up. “There!”

Mavis looked down at her own hands in disbelief. “No way,” she said, holding her hands apart vertically between her legs, as if trying to see if there would, hypothetically, even be room.

“Way. Back in college he, um, had kind of a nickname.”

“And that was?”

“The Club.”

Mavis’s eyes flashed with surprise before she broke out into bright, chiming laughs. A couple of the other girls passed through, clearly curious as to what was so damn funny. But they were gone before they had a chance to press for info—not that I was still in a sharing mood.

“Makes sense. A dick that big…yeah, you could kill someone with it.”

“Imagine something that size being, you know, your first.”

“I can’t even,” she said. “My first was…not even close. Maybe three of those would’ve added up to one, uh, club.”

I waved my hand through the air, trying to dismiss all of it. “It doesn’t matter. I’d been seeing him around with my other friends—he’s close with Noah and Will, you know, from the band—and so far we’d been keeping our distance from one another. I knew it was only a matter of time before we were going to have to talk, but…”
