FIFTEEN

REBECCA

Rushing toward my TownCar, I waved the driver off to get behind the wheel since I was running late to meet Giancarlo. Before we pulled away from the curb, a body jumped inside. I screamed just before a hand covered my mouth. The other hand pointed a gun at Vale, who’d drawn his 357 from the side seat.

The familiar scent of the ocean hit me, and I pulled away. “Julian?” I screeched. “Are you trying to get yourself killed?”

“Where’s your father, Rebecca?”

Oh shit.

“I don’t know.”

“Bullshit.” He put his gun away and glared at Vale. “I’m a Fed. Put the damn gun down.”

I nodded reluctantly to Vale, but turned to Julian. “Seriously, Jules.” I grabbed his suit jacket, fear and anger charging through me. “You’ve gone too far this time. Any hope of you making a case will get thrown out when I tell my lawyer how you stormed my car and—”

“Where did you send him?”

“Some place you can’t get to him,” I boasted, all coarse and maniacal, shoving my face right up against his.

For a moment, my lips nearly brushed against his mouth. Up close, Julian Russo was even more gorgeous. A flash of mischief in his blue eyes suggested he liked how I challenged him. His sultry gaze stroked something wicked in me. His breath became my breath and for a split, fine hair of a second, I saw him move in to kiss me.

I backed away despite the heat firing through my veins.

“You tipped him off, and he left the country.” Julian sat back and pinched his trousers. “That’s obstruction, Rebecca.”

“How can it be obstruction when you came to me off the record?” I swallowed, disappointed at how easily he let that moment between us pass. “What did you expect me to do?”

Julian smirked at me. “I’m submitting my notes from our meeting. How I questioned you about the drug. Your plausible deniability just evaporated. If that shipment drops, you’re just as liable as Messina, Daria, and Byrne.”

“I thought I had six weeks to terminate the agreement before the big drop. I found the contract with the pharmaceutical company. I know who’s making the drug and—”

“Stop the fucking car!” Julian yelled.

“What?”

He pulled his gun again and aimed it at Vale before he could pull his. “Have the driver stop. And shut your mouth, Becca. What you just told me means I have to get a warrant and tear your office and your house apart. Bring you in if you don’t hand it over. Don’t say another word. Do you have any idea the ethics I’m violating? Letting our history stop me from doing my job.” He waved the gun again. “Stop the fucking car!”

“Do it,” I yelled. “Stop. Pull over.”

When my driver yanked the car to the left, Julian lost his balance and landed on top of me. His wide chest heaved as the full length of him covered me. All I felt was muscle. Everywhere. Brawny palms landed on both sides of my head as he pushed off me.

But I grabbed his tie and brought his face close to mine. “I’m sorry.” I pressed my lips to his and for a moment, he moved with me, his tongue sweeping into my mouth. He then devoured me as passion exploded between us. I moaned into his kiss, feeling lost and anchored at the same time. All of my focus centered on this beautiful man kissing me. Savagely, with a taut, hard body as he growled from deep in his chest.

“Jules,” I squeaked, just to make sure we hadn’t died.

His eyes flashed open, lust and fury narrowing those blue orbs at me. He pushed off me quickly and slid down the bench seat. “I’m sorry, Becca. There’s no way... No way I can... With you.”

I swallowed and sat up. I watched my driver come around with murder in his eyes as if he planned to haul Julian out of the car himself. As the door opened, I put my hand there to make the driver wait.

“That was just a kiss.” I cleared my throat. “To say thank you.”

“For what?”

“You’re right. I just admitted something to you and—”

“Stop talking.” Julian climbed over me and pushed my driver out of the way. Standing on the curb, he bit out, “I got my indictment. I’ll be looking for your father. You won’t be hearing from me again, Rebecca. Not like this.” He straightened his tie and stalked off down the street.

I caught my breath watching him, the smooth gait, long legs, and sexy ass shifting in his pants.

Flushed, I let the driver close the door and slid back to my seat in the middle of the bench, but Vale was right there next to me, staring at me with pain pinching his eyes. “Becca, I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“I’m not protecting you very well.” He pushed a hand through his hair. “I never expected—”

“We’re all in a situation we never expected to be in. It’s fine. Just ask the driver to keep going, please.”

“You sure? I don’t like this business you have with Giancarlo.” Vale turned gruff. “Your father would never approve.”

I nodded. “I know. I’ve been too good of a girl, haven’t I?” Pining after a man who broke my heart. Refusing to date. I’d made Vale’s job too easy and in a matter of weeks, he had his hands full.

“Yes. You have. You’ve been a pleasure for me and Gil to protect.”

“I’m the head of this family now. Things are going to get bumpy.” I patted his leg and when he went to move back to the other seat, I stopped him, wanting him next to me. It made me feel protected and knew it made him feel better.

“Let’s move on,” Vale yelled to the driver and smiled at me before glancing out the windows on both sides. “Lock the fucking doors too, will ya?”

I didn’t doubt Julian would find my father. But without extradition, he couldn’t touch my parents. Hopefully, Jules’s network was secure and no one else in my world would know where my father was.

Ruthless princes didn’t need an extradition order. Just mercenaries and weaponized drones.

We kept heading downtown, my heart pounding. I felt so on edge and confused about kissing Julian. He exuded just as much raw power, and the taste of him was as exquisite as Gian’s. I never craved danger, but that’s the only road my heart had been sending me down lately.

My driver stopped at Alicia’s building and as usual, Vale turned his nose up at the neighborhood. He got out and opened the door for me this time, looking around, waiting for someone else to jump me.

“Thank you,” I said to him, taking his hand as he helped me up to the curb.

He discreetly secured the gun he kept under his suit jacket and, with his hand on the small of my back, he led me into Alicia’s club. I let him be extra protective just this once. My fighting to be my own powerful force in this city took a small break.

Once we passed the long bar, I put my hand on his chest. “I got it, Vale.”

Alicia had relented and allowed him to escort me inside each time. I didn’t want to push my luck.

I gazed at the dimly lit seating lounge. Giancarlo’s shadow stretched out. With his hands in his pockets, a chill went through me. I still got damp between the legs anticipating what he’d do to me in his private suite. I’ve been waiting to feel his cock inside me.

He fulfilled fantasies and dirty secrets I never imagined sharing with someone else. All the desires I’d kept hidden since Sebastien left me.

After our breakup, I couldn’t bear to be with anyone else. But like a man, I had needs. Which was why I couldn’t stay away from this place. It had addicted me to kinks beyond intercourse. Like being dominated and tied up. Spanked and fingered and spanked again.

Vale grumbled under his breath, disproving who I spread my legs for. Anyone else would sneer at her guard for such a display. But Vale and Gil risked their lives for me because they cared about me. I didn’t get to pick and choose when that caring kicked in.

“I’ll be outside,” Vale said all gruff, but nodded and left, knowing his place.

I watched my guard shuffle past the bar and out the door. The smell of cologne surrounded me and a flash of pure male heat warmed my back.

“I didn’t think I’d see you here tonight.” Gian’s voice, deeper here than in other places, spread liquid fire through my veins. “Considering...”

“We’re different people here, right?”

“Exactly,” he breathed his answer with a wicked cadence lacing his tone.

“I had considered not coming, if you must know.” I closed my eyes, disappearing inside myself and turning into a different woman, wanton and free the way he made me. I couldn’t stay the fuck away if someone paid me.

“Oh, I’ll make sure you come.”

“How?” I swallowed, a hot shiver running down my spine.

“Tonight, you’re my boss’s wife. You’ve been very bad and need to be punished. I was told not to fuck you. But...”

I shuddered at how he was ready to cross that line with me. “But...”

“I don’t play by the rules.” Warm lips caressed my neck, sending electric vibrations through every cell of my body.

I turned around, suddenly aching to taste him. After feeling Julian’s mouth, I craved to be kissed. Giancarlo’s handsome face still made me weak in the knees.

His eyes looked different tonight. A gleam I’d not seen before. Either here or in our real world.
